I think we need 2. I ordered the 1 from MSD and when I installed it the CEL came on. I called MSD and they said we needed 2 adapters not just one and they are different part numbers too. So I received those, installed them and the CEL did not come back on. But yeah we need tack adapters unless someone knows something I don't. The Tach Adaptors are required to stop the stock computer from setting ignition coil codes. The codes are mostly an annoyance, but if left alone for an extended period, these codes can begin to affect engine operation. The best bet is to put in the adaptors.
How do they work? Simple, really. When you install an ignition box like MSD or Crane, the stock wires that used to provide primary current to the coil(s) are now merely supplying a trigger signal to the box. The box, in turn, then drives the coil(s).
The stock computer senses that the current demands of the ignition circuit have now been sharply reduced (it takes far less current to provide a trigger signal to the new box than to drive the coils themselves). The clever stock computer interprets this as a coil problem, and set a code that turns on the Check Engine light.
What the Tach Adaptors do is basically provide a 'dummy' coil load to the stock ignition circuit, therefore increasing its current flow, and keeping the stock computer happy. They resemble small transformers, and wire across the stock ignition circuit just like the stock coil.

What kind of replacement coils are there for the 420A engine. I have been told that the regular MSD Blaster Coils will not work with the MSD DIS2. Is that true, and do you know what coils will work?

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't have a standard coil per say. Nor do we have a distributor. Not sure if there is a replacement for the coil-pack or not. Think all you need to do is just upgrade the ignition with a DIS-2 and the adapters....No need to worry about a coil. That's how I comprehend it, someone please instruct if oterwise...
