#11097, "Trans problems! 95 Talon ESI Please help!!"

I just bought a 95 Talon esi. No mods plans stock with a 121,000 on the motor and trans. I'm getting a strange sound when I stop the car and leave the trans in gear. It happens in both forward and rev.. When I'm stopped I get a metal on metal sound kinda like a grinding sound that comes and goes. It does not make the sound in Net or park. Also if I shift out of drive to net before I stop, once stopped about 2-5 secs or so the engine or trans jumps or stumbles. Also this morning on the way to work the car would not shift out of 2nd... So I dropped the trans pan (to check for and metal shavings.. None found just some very very small shavings and some metal sludge on the magnet)and put in a new filter and some fluid. Car drove home OK still have the same noise in drive and rev and the rumble when stopping in net. Any Ideas?????? Thanks Rick

Manual or auto?

Since you say "when stopping in neutral.." It leads me to think manual.

When you say "dropped the trann pan, replaced filter.." i think auto.

Which one? Manuals don't have pans or filters. If you're a auto, why are you stopping in neutral anyway?

If it's a manual, check your clutch fluid reservour.

No it is an auto... I put it in net to stop the noise when I have it in drive I get a grinding metal on metal noise.. This happens some of the time but not always...I shifted to net to see if the noise would go away and it did.....Thanks for the input.

Does the grinding noise only happen when you are in gear and almost coming to a complete stop? If so, it may be normal. Our chrysler tranny makes a weird grinding noise when you almost come to a complete stop (we have minivan trannies, and I hear the minivans do the same thing). Also, if you put it in neutral, it will not make the noise, but instead, it will make a weird clunk (like you hit a small bump) as you almost come to a complete stop. That's normal.
