#8530, "Who has the Retrofit LSD?? Possible Issue? "

I have the Retrofit LSD in the RS-T, got it i think way back in 06 from the ERT group buy deal..Anyway, the car maybe has seen a few thousand miles since then(yeah its a garage queen), but it seems like it's not really working right. I still get decent amount of torque steer. Now that i've got the boost back up to around 15-17 psi, its pretty noticeable. So I jacked up one side of the car, and I could turn the one front wheel by hand(in N of course), pretty easily. There was some resistance, but not locked by any means. Is this right? I'm not too sure exactly how this thing is supposed to work, so I don't know.. Maybe since it really hasn't been driven much, it hasn't broken in very well..Not too sure here..

thats not right. The retrofit applies friction to each side to make the dif move as one solid piece as opposed to two axles moving inside the diff. Kinda sounds like yours failed.

If you're turning one wheel by hand with the car in the air, it should turn the opposite wheel the same way with the LSD. If the opposite wheel turns the opposite direction or not at all then there's definitely a problem

Yeah both wheels turn the same way when both fronts are off the ground, but with one on the ground, I can still turn the wheel thats in the air. There is resistance, but its not locked by any means. Honestly, I dont think it worked right from day one anyway...At this point though, what options are there? Is Retrofit still in business? Anyone know how to work on these things? I still dont understand how two friction plates submerged in gear oil, contacting a small surface area on the gears keeps the axles locked together.. Lucky for me I still have my stock Diff laying around though.

Hmm, I thought last time I had mine up in the air and I spun one wheel the other turned the opposite direction(unlike a LSD) but once it was "activated" it would grab, to be honest I haven't been able to test it out, I know I have a retrofit(got it from Terry).

Zac it shouldnt do that. I know when i got it out I made it a point to check it out to make sure it held the spidergears locked against it and it was pretty tight.

Now dont get me wrong Matt, if you grab well enough the wheels will turn like an open diff but since your getting torque steer I would say its not holding.

The Spec for the diff being locked was 45lbs. So if you put one wheel on the ground and put a torque wrench on the axle nut you should not be able to turn the wheel until you hit 45lbs. Now you also have to factor in useage/age but if its 35-45lbs then i would say its normal.

They are not hard to work on. The problem is that if the friction material failed then you will need a replacement. I would have to see if Kaluga can get a hold of the guy that made them.
