#7870, "Rear Main & New Clutch"

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to have my rear main seal done because I just can't take it anymore and now that my clutch slipping, I have no choice but to fix it promptly. My car is going to maintain being a daily driver with a few mods here and there. I have no plans on passing 200 hp if I even make that. Should I got with the Rally Kit HD Stage 1 clutch or the TZ Kit Stage 2 clutch from South Bend Clutch? I'm leaning toward Stage 1 but I'm not 100% sure if that's the right move. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly this is the clutch I got and its amazing. I have a bit done to my engine too. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/F1-RACING-STAGE-1-CLUTCH-KIT-95-MITSUBISHI-ECLIPSE-GS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem5189c228ddQQitemZ350203554013QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2595wt_790

IMO any stage 1 clutch would do. That clutch I linked to is rated for 230hp.

+1 for the F-1 (or the PT Cruiser).

For $200 will hold any NA application. I'm running it right now with the daily (5k on it) no problems.

+3 for the f1. I just installed it a few weeks ago and havent had a problem with it since. Ive got a CAI, UDP, catback exhaust, a 60MM TB, and a venom Intake Manifold. It seems to hold really well, I haven't had a slip yet. Im not sure what hp im putting out, but that gives you a general idea of what its handling for me.

Yes you can. Here's a write up in the Wiki that I did on removal;

http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=Removing%20your%20transmission

Just to give you an idea of what it takes. Obviously, you just need to take your flexplate off for the rear main seal.

Wow that seems like a difficult job. I guess I have to learn sooner or later.

It seems pretty straight forward. I'm more concerned about actually getting the tranny out. How heavy is it?

Hey. I wanted to tell everyone that I finally installed the clutch, and the rear main seal. It's not as hard as I thought it would although the tranny was heavy. I wanted to say thanks to everyone in here who recommended me the F1 clutch. Also BulllettDSM and 420agreenvilleSC, I couldn't have done with without your help!

Just FYI, I pounded the crap out of mine on the track this past weekend. Held like glue. No problems since either.

Thanks. I like what I'm feeling so far although I can feel a little vibration in the pedal but I heard that's always the case on a new clutch.

Yes I've been driving it lately. Trying to get that 500 miles break in. The clutch pedal feels so light but you can feel it grab immediately. Good stuff.

Btw, I'm noticing the shifter has been getting really touch to switch. Is this normal with the breakend period?

Well it feels like sometimes it's just hard to put into gears. It will always go in but not easily sometimes. It's the kind of feeling you get when the clutch fluid is empty. The clutch fluid is full with new fluid, and the transmission has 2 quarts of fluid. I haven't seen any leaks so it should still have 2 quarts lol. On the brighter note, my rear main is not leaking anymore, thank god!

Makes me wonder if you caught a little air in the system when you did the tranny. It may need to be bled and sometimes it is tricky getting that last air bubble out (though I honestly haven't had that problem yet).

Also check to be sure that the horseshoe clips are on completely and correctly (sometimes they get put on crooked). And look at the bushings on the tranny to see if they are sloppy.

Plus the clutch will feel lighter than stock (as you noticed). Normal.

Mark pretty much hit the nail on the head with what to check. Personally I'd bet the horseshoe clips need to be pounded back into place or replaced entirely. Sometimes you can reuse them 5-10 times, sometimes they won't hold again after the first time that they've been removed It seems to vary from car to car

Ok for the last few days the shifting has been normal. It's very easy to get into gear and very smooth. I checked the clips and they are fine. I also bled the system right after the install. Kind of a strange scenerio but all is well now and i'm loving it!
