#6998, "Is the neon trans lighter than the mitsu trans?"

I pulled my tranny yesterday and held it to the nvt350 i picked up last month.

The one i obtained is substantially lighter than my oem. Feels like 20-30 pounds lighter. The oem one i pulled was about bone dry so it wasn't full of fluid.

Me and my friend chris are boggled by this so we were hoping 2gnt could answer the call.

Thanks for checking this out and posting.

Much love,

Brandon

Nope. Clutch that came with the trans was on the porch and the clutch on my car never left the car. Both were bare bones transmissions sans a pound or so of mounting brackets. Not that one would feel that picking the two of them up side by side.

The nvt350 i have is significantly different. Looking at the transmission from the bellhousing side, the bolt hole behind the differential on the top side isn't there on my new trans. Nothing bolts there. It's just different. The speedo sensor had to be swapped out of my og tranny to the new one because the harness plug didn't match.

Both trannys are made by New Venture and should be NV-T350's. The major difference between the two is that your factory eclipse/talon tranny has a hydraulic clutch bell housing and a 3.94 final drive and the neon tranny has a cable style clutch bell housing and a 3.55 final drive ratio. As for the weight issue I really never noticed a weight difference as I wasn't looking at the mod as a weight saver and more as beneficial performance mod. If you haven't done so look at Terry's 3.55 swap write up: http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=3.55

96' eclipse gs, 2gb conversion
built bottom end, crane #16 cams, hx40 pro billet, MS1 v3 MSn'S-E, 3.55 trans, quaife lsd

Depending on the year that your came out of, the 95 Ecplispes had additional structural webbing on the outside bottom of the trans that would make it heavier compared to the 3.55 neon trans. Be careful. there was also a 3.20:1 neon trans.

The Neon Speed sensor wont work with a 2gnt. Turn ratio is different. The newer plug on the trans you go in the mail will be the same plug for any new speedo sensor you buy. keep that in mind.

Alright. Well, i'm going to get in touch with my friend sana and find the roots of this tranny.

I dont think i have an eclipse/avenger spec trans at all. The speedo sensor plug is the same for all 5sp 2gnt's?

As far as driveablility goes, what would be the tell tale signs of having a neon trans?

Tag on the trans should identify it. Otherwise if your not turbo you car will get slower!

Damnit. Well, i guess i'll have to see next time i take my wheel off. The tranny was painted silver by god knows who and it's laid on pretty thick so i can't read the tag. Only reason i knew it was an nvt 350 when i picked it up was because i know what they look like.....

Dunno if my car got any slower. I can't get on it due to a lack of a rear roll stop bracket.... Mine broke because the asshat mech who did the clutch install left a few bolts out costing me two motor mounts and a drivers side axle.

If anyone has a rear roll stop bracket out there, feel free to pm me. I have the cash in hand for it right now. No way in hell i'm paying the stealership $75 fucking dollars for it.

Life in the slow lane is great. emoji

did the neon trans have fluid in it? that might account for a few lbs

Both were empty.

I finally got my rear roll stop bracket after not having one since december.

It's a 3.94

Still, the speedo sensor plug incompatability had me scratching my head but i love having working reverse lamps without the need to flip my "nitrous" switch. emoji I've driven miles down the road with my reverse lamps on like that before. I wanted to put in fogs to blind tailgaters but never did.
