#6923, "Transmission Choices, need your knowlege"

Alright heres the deal. By all accounts the transmissions in our cars suck, both manual and auto, and thus I want to swap it out. I plan on doing the manual swap, seeing as I'm running auto, and want to look into another transmission. So what transmissions fit the 420A block? And I don't mean just the standard swaps like to a neon transmission, I want to know all of them, all the ranges of choices I have and which ones are the most aggressively geared. Among others I'm interested in the Tiburon transmission if anyone knows anything.

Your input is greatly appreciated,
-Robert

Funny, I haven't heard that from anyone familiar with them.

Anything that wasn't designed for a 420A block (i.e., that didn't come stock in a 420A car) isn't going to fit. Period.

Ok so lets put it this way, all accounts that I've heard go along the lines of the transmissions sucking, but quite obviously its a matter of opinion.

So what's that leave me with? I know the Neon tranny will fit but what aside from that? And is the Neon tranny geared better or whats the deal, I keep hearing about people swapping the transmissions over to that of the Neon

The neon trans is geared more aggresssivley . There are no other trans that fit to my knowledge . I also hear that our auto sucks but manual can take tons of abuse . I also been auto for 5-6 years and turboed on it for 4 years with not one problem and i abuse the auto .

Alright cool. I've been wondering about the neon transmission for a while now, seeing that people have swapped over. I have the auto now but want to swap it over to manual because I want to play with it. I know that that sounds dumb but I've wanted a manual for a little while now and my current car is an auto. The overall process of the swap seems pretty simple, just a bit time consuming with the rundown that I found on here. Since the car is my project car and I have a steady DD as is thats not too big of a deal.

If anyone else has some input I'd be more than happy to hear it as well. I'm going to need to find a new clutch and flywheel, as well. Looking into maybe a Spec Stage 2 clutch but I'm not sure, and I don't have any idea where to begin with the flywheel.

Hahaha, alright fair enough. Seeing as the Neon transmission is more aggressively geared I'll likely end up going with that though.

Is there a difference between the stock Neon manual transmission and the SRT4 manual? And what years would match up to 420A engine from 96?

A little light reading for you;

http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=3.55

http://www.neons.org/forumdodge/trans.htm

The 3.55 tranny will need more power out of your engine to utilize it because of the gearing. I am running one right now on a 10.5 comp stocker and it is not fun at cruising speed (70mph @ 2350rpm)
