#5618, "How to remove shafts from the rear housing without a press"
Jul-30-06 06:28 PM by etx

Can someone (Dino/Terry heh) explain the process of removing the input and output shafts from the trans housing? In the service manual I see all kinds of fancy shit they use to hold the parts, and press the shafts out but I just need to get this MFer working again.

Oh yeah, also is their a full rebuild kit with syncro rings, snap rings, misc bearings, etc for this thing? May as well try to fully refurbish it. I don't want to do this again for a long fucking time.

I've used a socket and a hammer.. but it took ages and it wasn't easy. $100 vs. three hours with a hammer...

So you just used a socket and pounded on the back of the shafts?

You have 2 options. Take a socket that is the diameter of the shaft and pound the shafts out. you need to alternat each shaft every three hits or so. It will take a while.

When you go to reassemble the trans build all the shafts and forks in the belhousing and place the gearbox case of the shafts. YOu will need to carefully take a larger soket and pound the bearing onto the shaft. Becareful the inner race of the bearing cracks real easy.

The second way is to buy a 120.00 press that you will use for life.

now you wouldbe able to disassemble the output shaft to access 1st and second gear without a press.

The rebuild kit comes with all brass synchro's (i have had issues with them not working as well as factory) bearings, and seals. You will need to reuse all clips bolts ect.

Where did you get the rebuild kit? Napa said they had one, and sold me one for an auto. After that i pussyed out at took it to the shop and paid $70 for them to press out the shafts and inspect everything. It needs all new syncros, and a bunch of other shit that was MISSING. Who the fuck reassembles a trans and leaves parts out. I want to go back to the last place that worked on it and fucking chokeabitch.
