Well during onetrav's engine swap, we replaced the speedo ring gear on the diff since the old one was busted...Replacement went fine, but soon after driving, the ring gear came loose and popped off the diff for some reason..Any reason why this happened? There is only one way for that thing to go on the diff, since they have to mesh properly with the speed sensor's gears..We are going to drop the trans again, and re do this, so any insight here would be great..dont want this to happen again..

id you verify it actually came off? Speed sensor might have died. it happens.

Yes, I spun the speed sensor and it works perfectly. I also stuck my finger in there and verified that it is loose. Maybe we need to just beat it on further?

Can that ring gear be put on either way? It seemed to go on without much force really..I just lightly tapped it onto the diff and it slid right on. There are two tabs on the speedo gear, and they sat all the way down till they touched the diff..The tabs are not perfect center on the ring gear though, they sit at the top on one face side, so if the gear was flipped, the ring gear would go on futher on the diff, but it didnt seem like the gears would mesh correctly that way..am i missing something here lol..

hmm well the old one the tabs were broken..but the new one they were fine..The only thing i can think of is if i put the gear on upside down..but we tested the correct placement by putting the gear up to the sensor's gear and it meshed well only one way..Can that gear be put on either way, and it still work? Because it did work for a while anyway. Anyone have an up close pic of the diff with that installed on it? That would be sweet..

After looking at the new gear, I confirmed that it can go on either way and still register speed, but I belive the little locking tab must be down in order to keep it in place. I think that might have been our problem. I dont remember which way it was. We will see tonight.

I did the exact same thing when I put my retrofit in. It is VERY easy to put them on upsidedown b/c they do mesh either way. I bought a second one b/c I thought mine had broke, but it just turned out when I took the tranny out I had installed it wrong. When they are correct you know b/c you really have to pound them on. I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one whose done this

what oil are you running. if your not using the recommended stuff it will swell the gear. i know this by experience. i happend to me right after i installed a new tranny in my car
