#5204, "Tranny question"

Alright tonight my stock tranny should be coming out(NV-T350) It is going to get a complete rebuild. The guy my dad talked to said it would be $500 if I do the pulling and replacing.

My question is if it would be ok for me to tell him I want a rebuild, but to rebuild it using the the 1995-1999 Neon SOHC gear box. I don't really know how to word it. But do you guys think that would pose any problem? He wouldn't be doing a stock rebuild but from what I understand that gearbox goes into our bellhousing as if it were made to.

Thanks for your help guys/gals

sounds like your confusing a 3.55 trans swap and a rebuild. a rebuild involves a rebuild kit (400.00) and replacing the bearings and synchro's. The neon gearbox, depending on the year we are talking about is different than the trans you have.

no no I know you can take the 3.55 gearbox and put it in out tranny.

I need a rebuilt transmission. I just got done pulling the tranny actually. I was thinking instead of having it rebuilt stock..If I should have the neon gearbox built. Since it will be rebuilt anyways, why not just use those gears? Make sense?

what neon trans. early neon trannys were 3.55 trans. A neon 3.94 trans will only be a few years old since they were used 2000+ so why rebuild it. There is nothing stronger about a neon trans (generally speaking).

The 2001+ magnum had the same trans we had. the 95-99 ACR-R/T-DOHC also had a 3.94 trans.

Our trans dont just fail unless you abuse them. I dont consider drag racing them abusing them either. Grinding gears, failing clutches wheel hop are examples that make our trans fail. Unless you have something wrong with the trans there is no reason to rebuild it. The factory synchro's are better than the synchro's that your going to have after its rebuilt. for 500.00 he is not installing factory synchros.

I have no idea what you are trying to ask.

You need to explain the situation here as well if your going to ask the same question you posted on tuners...... Your asking if you should use Neon trans parts to rebuild your trans....

The rebuild kit for the neon or 2GNT is the same kit. The difference in the neon trans and the 2GNT (depending on the year of neon) is the final drive and 5th gear. Neither is really stronger. It is said the 3.55 is geometrically stronger because its smaller but the difference is so minor, its not funny. Besides, to do that you would need to buy a Neon trans. To buy the output shaft and 5th gear from the dealer you would be looking at about 1800.00 in parts.

Puting a .72 5th gear wont help you much on the highway. I did this with on of my 2GNT's and it dropped the rpm's by 200-300 at 80mph. Not a big gain.

The 400.00 rebuild kit only comes with synchro's and bearings. it doesnt come with dogs, any gears, or the slider assemblies.
