#5196, "Is this my transmission or clutch? What's the deal?"
I was driving last night, and all of a sudden it felt like I ran something over. Then my car starts making this clunking noise, it seems like it does it every time the wheel turns. Then as i'm limping it home, i go up a littloe hill, and i give the car some gas and the revs go up, but it doesn't accelerate. Then the clutch is hard to press and it won't shift. So i coast it into a parking lot, and that's where it sits. I can shift with the car off and the clutch out, but if i start it and press in the clutch, nothing. The clutch is still hard to press. So... any ideas? Thanks in advance. This one's going to be expensive...

Sounds to me like it is just your throw out bearing, but there is really no way to be sure. Definitely drop the tranny and see what is going on.

I would take a close look at the input shaft, clutch fork, T/O brg carrier and release bearing. If damage is done to one part the rest can be affected also. A loud clunk is never a good thing. But clutch is cheaper than transmission.

The guy looking at it said the transmission is screwed, and I need a whole new one. I didn't take it to some shop either... this is a friend of the family type thing, and this guy knows his shit. So I guess I need a new transmission. Great.
