#5126, "AT To MT Swap..."

Peace,
I own a 97' AT RS and I recently came across a opportunity to purchase all the parts (shifting assembly, pedel set, clutch lines, trans., etc.) for a Automatic to Manual swap... My question is, it's coming off a 95' RS and to my knowledge, those 420's are diff., I don't know the specifics, but I know it has two diff. plugs in the harness (engine) then the 97-99 420's. Is the trans. diff. too? Can I install the 95' set up onto the 97' without having to make any modifications/rewiring?

I'd also like to know, just to be certain before I pull all the parts off, what parts are needed for the swap, besides a clutch system & flywheel?

-Trans.
-Clutch Cables
-Shift Assembly
-Pedal Assembly
-ECU
-Master & Slave Cylinders

---Anythin' else?

I obviously don't know anythin' about transmissions. I intend to rebuild the trans. before installin', but I don't know what should be rebuilt and before I go to a shop I'd like to know what I'm talkin' about so that they don't try and fu!k around... I don't trust anyone and havin' them realize "I know" what I'm talkin' about may actually make them do it right the First Time... What needs to be rebuilt, what parts (the only thing I know about, is to use the OEM trans. fluid)? Lastly, what clutch system and flywheel should I go with? I'm "all aspirated", but will eventually be boosted by the end of this year. What "normal" set up will hold tru for the time being and what set up should I change to once boosted? I've read threads where certain known brands such as Clutchmaster, ACT, etc. weren't as good and didn't perform as expected.

To be honest, I just started readin' up on the 1G Neon SOHC 355 trans. swap... I may just go this route instead of installin' the regular Eclipse tranny bein' it isn't as productive as the Neons... From what I've read so far, it seems simple to do... I'm sure all of you that have answered this que. 100's of times are gettin' tired of doin' it, but when I'm not 100% comfortable with somethin' ahead of time, I'll ask someone who is...

From what I understand, I'm goin' to purchase the Bellhousing (or complete MT of the 2G Eclipse) and purchase/use the 1G Neon SOHC 355 trans., also needin' to swap out the Neon Speed Sensor. That seems to be it...

Basically, everythin' needed for an AT to MT swap stays the same, besides the tranny and speed sensor correct?

As always, I appreciate anyone willin' to answer and give up there time to help me out...

Peace,
Jem

Look in the parts list link I gave you. Sounds like your pretty much geting everything.

The only difference from the later trannies and the 95 that I got is the plug for the VSS, the 95s have round pins like the 95 coils instead of the flat pin 97+.

If you dont end up using the vss plug for the 95 and you have it ill take it off your hands! Im using a computer plug for it at the moment.

Rebuilding... Its very exepensive, best bet would be terry ( I think)Star Turbo something (sorry lol). He can probably get one out to you for like 500 ish...
If its a tranny that was well taken care of then it shouldnt be a prob. The one I got I actually drove the car befoare taking it, it grinded in 2 and 3rd, switching to the chrysler oem fluid fixed this and its like butta now.

What you might want to do is replace the seals, the axle ones ( 7 bucks a pop) and maybe even the input one ( I had to its 45 at dealers). So it wont leak on you.

As far as a clutch, ACT never made one for us. But I would get a beefier set up, something along a stage 3+ if you will boost later, it wont affect you too bad for NA and it will be broken in by the time you boost.

The neon tranny, will feel like a dog NA and even on low boosted cars. Its more for fuel economy and Traction. Not for acceleration etc...

and yes you will have to change the vss and the ring gear on the diff to match, or keep both and hook them up ( if you dont have the connector then you will have to make one or find one anyways...).

If anything is leaking, like the slave or master cyl, go ahead and replace or rebuild them now. Also the lines. A SS one can be bought from RRE.
