#4721, "HELP! Troubleshoot my trans/shifting problems (really need help)"

Ok well slowly over time the ability to shift in my car has become diminished. It seemed to coincide with the current short shifter becoming loose. The so called "lock nut" (has the plastic on the end) slowly worked it's way loose and left plenty of play in the shifting of my car. At the same time it became increasingly difficult to shift my car under load and into gear. I eventually had a chance to tighten the shifter, the problem still is there.

Say at idle with the clutch pedal in, I go to shift into 1st.. It feels like hitting a brick wall. The shifter won't budge. I may be able to shift it into 2nd at that point but it is very tough.

Sometimes going into 2nd while driving and the clutch pedal down, 2nd is a slow sliding into place. It feels like it's slowly nudging into place. I canNOT shift hard under load, it simply takes too long to slide the shifter into the gear selection location.

If the car is completely turned off. Most of the time I can easily shift gears and there is no resistance. I have used the shifter selectors on the trans and they shift just fine. We also saw that the slave cylinder was engaging the fork into the clutch.

Sometimes if i let out the clutch in neutral and push it back in, it will shift, but still very rough. I don't feel that is a major concern because sometimes it still won't select a gear and sometimes i have to do it multiple times. While on the highway, 3rd and 4th and 5th seem to shift normally but still very rough.

Reverse at idle is just as inconsitant as 1st and feels like the shifter just won't select a gear.

*I have completely drained the trans and refilled it using NVT-350 trans fluid from the dealer. No change. The trans fluid that was drained was not very metallic, i was quite impressed actually.
*Earlier this year (febuary) @ ERT we installed my Retrofit Diff, shifted perfect for months following.
*Speedometer stopped working several weeks ago, after the shifting problems came up.
*Thinking possible the shifter linkage has been warped or bent due to the loose shifter.

I would appreciate any input this community has, im by far no expert on transmissions and my troubleshooting efforts have obviously been futile. Give me ideas and how to test them and i will see what i can do. I'm at a complete loss at this time. This is my daily driver and i can drive it, but not enjoy it. Thanks 2gnt.

Sounds like you have a clutch problem. You can pull the the speedo sensor and make sure the speedo gear is in tact. I honestly think with the trans shifting fine when the car is off that the problem is with the clutch.

see if the car will idle with the trans in neutral and parking brake released. if the car tries to move then the clutch is still grabbing.

No i can sit at a light with the clutch engaged. I have to since i spend most of the light trying to get it into first and when i do, i leave it there. The car does not go anywhere in that situation. I have found that if i really push the clutch hard, i can usually get it into gear just a little bit easier.

I'm just as lost as you are when it comes to trans issues, bro. Shot in the dark, but are all the lines clipped securely into place? Shifter cables before and after they go through the firewall? Clutch line? Any kinks in anything? I would imagine a dent in the clutch hardline could cause issues.

I wonder if you could break the slave loose and nudge it a bit closer to the fork for more range of motion? Also, have you tried to bleed the clutch? If you haven't done that in a while, it's a good idea. John and I bled mine for the fist time at 142k. All kinds of shit came out of that line and afterwards it was shifting like a champ.

Just some ideas...

Ok well I guess there's a sure sign my clutch is not disengaging properly. Today I rolled to a light, came to a near stop.. car still moved, kept moving. Usually it would just stop, when I applied my brakes but instead it moved again. My idle is a little rough when my clutch pedal is all the way in, and the tranny is in gear. So I'm hoping this is just a sign that my slave cylinder sucks? If more info is needed just let me know, i will do my best to explain.
