Ok guys, I have a neon tranny and I put the bell housing from my car on there, bolted it all up and went to move the shift levers and they won't budge at all? So I took it apart again, and inspected it then put it back together again, this time the short one won't move but about 1 degree and the long one will move only about 3-4 degrees (mabey). Neither of them feel right at all. Like they are suck inbetween a gear or something. Am I doing something wrong here? It is a bitch to get the 3 pins to line up, but they do line up. I'm guessing that one or more of them is in a bind and that is what is making it not work right? Anyway if anyone has had experience with this please help. I would like to get this thing back on the road.

did a bit of reading here and what are the counter balance weights adn where are they? Could this be causing the problem? Just looking at the tranny I can't see any differance from my eclipse one.
also, Im not sure if I did the correct swap for the shif levers. Everyone says the shift levers, does that mean the whole shaft that is in the tranny? Or just what attaches to the shifter cables?

just what attaches to the shifter cable. on some neon tranmissions the shift levers have counterweights on them which wont work in our application.
Anyway, when you're just moving the levers on the trans, they really dont move all that much. just see if it goes into gear okay. the large one is what puts it in gear. move the long one with the short one in the "neutral position". it should click ones to either direction. then put it back in the middle, move the small one to one side. and try the long one in each direction. then repeat moving the small one the other direction. if it goes into gear you're straight, put that fucker in. if not, you've got problems.
The only way you didnt put it back together right is if you forced it together. It should more or less just all fall into place after you have the output bearing seated right. once that bearing is all set you just wiggle the shift levers and then just go where they're supposed to.

You may have bound a shift rail against a shift rail reciever bushing. The only time i've ever reassembled a trans and it wouldn't go into any gears at all, that was the problem. i thought it dropped into place but there was about 1/16" gap in the case halves and i sucked it shut by threading the case bolts in. Turns out, one rail was just barely off center and had come to rest inside its reciever hole, but on the edge of the brass bushing causing it to bind the whole trans. My dumbass forcing it shut by bolting it together ended up completely ruining a bushing so it had to be replaced.
If such is your case, i have three or four bushings left and i'll send you one for the cost of a priority envelope and shipping.

yikes that is what it sounds like. Im going to pull it apart today and see what gives. Mabey one of those 4 pins did not go into the bell correctly. I hope that is not the case. Thanks I'll let you know.

well i got it all in, it was not an 'easy' thing but it is now done. I fucked up a couple of those brass sleeves in the bell. So to those of you who have yet to do this swap, just be carful when putting it back together. Nice and slow and it will all work out.

Yes, I bought it from grain for 250$ shipped. Just be carful when putting it back together. That is where I fucked up, I got greedy and wanted to get it done and did not realize those where brass, and they were out of alignment. You will see what I mean. I wish I would have taken pictures of it. *shrug*

We came across this on the stock tranny while installing the retrofit. One of the shift pins did not line up and when bolting it back together it completely mushroomed the bearing in the hole. Hopefully you are able to get a new one in there without a problem. We ended up having to get a new bellhousing, of course we were in a time crunch though so that was the quickest solution. We used a good flashlight and the longest skinniest flathead we could find. it's very hard to get them to line up. You can shift the levels before you bolt it all the way down and they should not come out. We did that before bolting it together just to test and make sure they were lined up.

once i get the output shaft bearing seated properly, i just wiggle the shift levers until the shafts fall into place on their own. case usually slams shut in a second or two. you can wiggle the bellhousing around a bit too if you need to.
