After experiencing first hand the fury of the plastic output shaft roller bearing race and other heinous crimes against the bell housing, I have been thinking about what would be done to build a bullet proof MTX. I spent a little time in forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=34&topic_id=2384, but it doesn't seem as all-encompassing as I would like to be. I'm thinking more generalized build suggestions. Here's what I have been thinking (for future reference).
*figure out a way to replace that damn plastic bearing with some sort of press-fit metal replacement (as suggested in the other thread). *cryotreat all the gears *friction/wear reducing coating for all moving parts (ie; Swain coating or similiar) *LSD (cryo?)
Obviously, a quality tranny build would include a clutch/flywheel/axle combo appropriate to the power output of the engine, but I'm talking about what it would take to really build a tranny you know could both handle the power and handle it for a good long time. Seems to me that the T350 has a handful of little problems that could be addressed. It's been a couple years since that thread came about, so I'm wondering what the veterans here would do if they decided to turn their focus on the tranny (if they have not already).
I got over 160k on my stock tranny before "the plastic" failed, so I think there is potential in this one, just want to give some thought to what I will be doing to the next tranny I pick up before it goes in.

just rebuild the tranny, with new needle bearings, and new output shaft bearing. then add a quaife, 3.55 gear set, and call it a day. ive yet to "break" a nvt tranny. it all about how good you are at messign with tranny's

Actually seeing this tranny apart, as grain and many others have, the "little problems" are just that. I think the output shaft roller bearing being housed in plastic is really only an issue when assembling and dissambling the transmission. Unless you feel that it could affect the ability of the bearing to do it's job effectively with a piece of the plastic lodged inside. (I have suffered the plastic piece breaking myself). While taking apart a 3g tranny (who is also made by NVT) we noticed the white-yellowish plastic gear (still can't think of the name but above the diff) was replaced by a much stronger looking metal gear. The 3g tranny has many engineering faults (you can't get out the damn pressure plate) that shows all stock trannies will have some sort of weak point. I for one am amazed at the ability of the nvt-350 to hold 2 to 4 times the original chp levels of the car for such long period of times.
