#4321, "got a new trans, blew it up in less than ten miles!"

So I went and bought yet another trans. Put it all back together, drove it to my buddies house (2 miles away, if that), went to go leave and it was making some ugly noise around 2k in every gear. so i realize that i forgot to put fluid in it. i shut it off right away and got the fluid and put it in.

It felt fine this morning when i went on a few short errands. Then i was messing with the speedo wiring and i crossed 2 of the wires and the car wouldnt start (it was fucking with the cam/crank sensors) so i finally got it wired right and i told my girl to sit in the car and start it up (it was in gear). so she takes her foot off the damn clutch and all i hear is a squak and then feel my foot being run over. so after flipping out on her and fixing the speedo, i get in the damn car and now the trans is fucked yet again. I drained the fluid and some minor metal shavings, but im sure i haven't seen the worst of it.

It makes a horrible shuddering noise accompanied by a vibration you can feel while accellerating. Hopefully i have enough parts from my two other gearboxes to fix this goddamn thing. I'm getting really sick of pulling this tranny every weekend.

I'm going to go pull off that access cover and see what kind of wonderful things await me in there.

edit: by the way, it was a 2001 neon 3.55 gearbox i used. and n/a the 3.55 sucks. i wish i had traction issues.

I may have lied. I pulled the whole trans out, then opened it up only to see that the gear on the speedo sensor was not properly attached.

me = idiot? i think so, though i'm not sure. There are minimal metal shavings in there. and they're very small, almost microscopic, and could even be from not cleaning my bellhousing well enough before re-assembling it.

While i was pulling the trans i glanced over at the cam gears to see that the belt was bowed up. I dont know if that was from turning the crank counter-clockwise or not but i'm going to check in a minute. I need to get a cherry picker so i can just pull the whole motor. i'm sick as hell of having to fish the trans in and out of the tight engine bay.

I'm pretty much done for the day except for checking the timing. maybe later when im drunk i'll put it back together and hope it works.

I pulled out the shafts and tore them down. the needle bearings are perfectly fine. everything inside this trans looks brand fucking new. yet its all fucked up.

It makes an annoying rattling sound when under a load. only while accellerating in 1,2 and 3. Its there all the way through first, and goes away at about 2500rpm in 2 and 3.

are all the mounts securely in place? maybe the vibration is due to a bad mount? i dunno... worth a look anyway.

Anyone know anyone who can help me tune this in the Pittsburgh area (Greensburg)?

Go start your car without the trans in it and se if it still rattles. Keep the wiries away from the flexplate.

To clarify, I think that Dino means to attach the bellhousing and starter and then start the car.

DON'T, on the other hand, start the car with an impact wrench on the crank pulley bolt. emoji

thanks, i cleared that up earlier in the chat. my crank pulley bolt consists of a 3/8" socket extension thats wedged into my crank (i used that for the center piece of the 5-ton 3jaw to get off the stock pulley). i threaded it and put a nut on it but its stripping out and i cant turn it anyway. i have to use vicegrips, it sucks.
