#383, "3.55 final drives are cool.."

yeap. I waxed my trans A year and a half of 15psi and daily abuse combined with low fluid did it in. I ate the torque surface off both 3rd and 4th's syncro rings, and destroyed the shift fork bushings on the 3-4 fork. Good times...

So, i bought a 3.55 final SOHC Neon trans on Thursday, tore it down Thursday night, dropped mine Friday, rebuilt it with the Neon guts Saturday, and put it back in on Sunday. The taller gearing is nice - i actually have a first gear that winds out now, rather than just pegging the tach. Fifth sucks - it's ugly tall. 80MPH in my new fifth gear is 2400RPM. :o

Other than that, it's nice. No more ugly trans noises, nice stiff crisp shifts, and enough gear to theoretically reach 204MPH

Then Dino swap the fifth for our stock .81 and give me the fifth gear from the SOHC.

I thought about it, but i didn't want to pay Joe, ARD's transmission specialist, to do it. I tore them down and reassembled mine myself, but i couldn't clamp and press the gear off myself, nor reassemble the shaft.

It'll work out. I'll either get bitchin gas mileage on long trips, or it'll go to shit. Waiting to see which way it goes...

I dunno. Don't have a speedo.

**edit**

http://car.race-cars.net/calculators/mph_calculator.html

There's a calculator. Use 24.4 for the tire diameter.

The SOHC Neon gear ratios are here: http://www.2gnt.com/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=6&categories=Manual+Tranny#35

I'll trade you my 80mph at 3700rpm for yours at 2400rpm any day. I wonder how much of an effect this mod would have on a mostly stock car.

In a stock 2gnt, which is pretty heavy for 140 crank HP, it would make it SLOW AS BALLS. The gears are just too long. You'd be slow like a SOHC Neon with two fat people in it.

However, it is possible to take a .72 fifth gear assembly and install it on a 2gnt trans. You'd end up with a taller fifth, but retain the 3.94 final drive.

aww man thats badass haha if my tranny ever goes I'm gonna do that it would be nice to have taller gears in a turbo 2GNT, I can max out the gears pretty quick that must be awesome for long trips, at least we're not driving corolla GTSs where they cruise at 80 MPH @ like 4500 RPM

all you have to do is swap the bellhousings right?

What about the guts from the new SRT 4 It's supposed to be a "heavy duty" 5 speed. Is there any chance that the guts from that 850 could be put in our 350? The gear ratios are this :
Fourth & fifth are overdrive & the final drive ratio is, 3.526:1
Gear ratios are as follows:

1. 3.647:1
2. 2.045:1
3. 1.367:1
4. 0.947:1
5. 0.756:1
I'm new to the tranny stuff so forgive me if this is a stupid thought.

what all did u *rebuild* trannys are not my specialty mines apart i dont see much to change, other then a couple bearings..

Bill

what did ya pay for that SOHC tranny for curiosity

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

You're right, there isn't much to change. usually, unless you're remmoving and reinstalling input shaft gears, rebuilding a T350 is mostly cleaning and visual inspection. All i really did was totally disassemble the donor unit (input shaft, output shaft, shift forks, rails, gear selector, roller bearing, sealed case bearings), clean them, inspect the syncro rings and dog teeth for undue wear, inspect the gear surfaces for the same, inspect the shift fork bushings for damage, make sure everything spins freely, then just reassemble.

What about the 1996-1999 DOHC (non-ACR and RT) Neon tranny? According to the page posted earlier it has the .72 5th gear and the 3.94 final drive. This way you would keep your acceleration, but gain a bit in the top end, right? I could be totally off base on this, but that sounds right to me.

Lets just say this... I'm over 100whp and soon to cross 200whp. Thanx 2GNT! Now if I could only learn to prove it.
