I'm having trouble understanding exactly what the problem is you're describing.

It spins free in nuetral. You put the clutch on it and spun it, and the diff didn't spin. Sounds like its in neutral. What's the problem?

If you have the trans sitting upright, it will be very hard to turn, as all the synchros are working like brakes on the gears. If you lay it down on its side it should ease up.

Depending on which gear you out it in and how much you turned the clutch, the rotation might not have been noticable. Lay it on its side, throw it in first, and give it a shot that way.

I put my retrofit back in about a week ago and already have the tranny mounted up the engine. Everything seems to spinning just fine. As long as you put everything back in correctly (which is little hard to mess up) what your describing seems fine to me. You put the ring gear in correctly right? It has a slight taper to it.
