#2384, "Suggestions for the 5spd NVT350 transmission"

Anyone have any ideas for aftermarket products and support for the F5MC1 / NV-T350 MTX transmission? There is an NV rep who is interested in seeing some thoughts and ideas to gauge the level of interest in aftermarket products. I have invited him to visit our board.

I know there have been complaints on the plastic retainer for the output shaft roller bearing. What else? We could definately drum up some cool products here.

But please, keep it semi-serious. No "i want a six speed" or "i want RWD/AWD" (i want AWD .. hehe). Keep it within reason.

OUTSTANDING!!!! Dino strikes again. Lets see, definately the output shaft bearing, taller 5th, jigs to do the gearset rebuild, hardened gears, straight cut gears, lsd or at least a diff repair service emoji. That's all I can think of right now, I haven't blown up enough of these yet to know what other weak points there are. emoji Do they do the clutches also?

I don't believe they do clutches. they specialize in gearboxes and transfer cases.

The center pin in the differetial likes to back out as well. Perhaps a fix for that could be arranged? i myself have my pin welded in place, but i don't feel this is an ideal solution.

I can't wait for Vinnie, Armond and Murix to get ahold of this. I'm sure they have some excellent ideas.

That's what I meant by a "diff repair service". Wait til I post the pics of JW's tranny that the pin broke in. It's ugly.

Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Better Synchros, Need I say more? I have blown one tranny's synchros, replaced it with a used one and the within 6 months the sams shit happens. I am driving with the bad used tranny right now and the original one is apart and I am working on replacing what I can so I have a working transmission. I haven't made enough power yet to break other parts but these.

Thats probably what toasted my tranny too. They said it was due to the diff pin.

Good job Dino. Between us, ASOG and the Neons, there surely has to be a good enough market to develop products. If some of these existed while the dealer was fixing mine, I sure would have had them installed...

The main thing I can think of is supplying replacement parts for the output shaft itself. If 1'st or second gear syncros die, you are pretty much screwed unless you have another transmission or at least another output shaft assembly laying around. I don't see what would be so hard about allowing dealerships to retail the output shaft components. It isn't put together any differently than the input shaft (beleive me, I checked). They already have a taller 5'th gear available. You just have to replace the gears on the input and output shaft for the 5'th gear combo on a SOHC neon tranny. It's pretty straight forward. The transmission is pretty innovative in my opinion, but I DEFINTELY DEFINTELY DEFINITELY have a complaint about that plastic OUTPUT SHAFT BEARING. That thing is complete garbage, and the instal instruction on it is bogus. it doesn't press into the bell housing end at all (free floats) and there is no way to keep it in and keep it perfectly aligned withough going through a million changes and troubles. if New venture Gear would just re-design their bearing cup retainer to hold the ENTIRE BEARING......or better yet, use a pressed on "METAL CONE STYLE" bearing (i.e. timken or other manufacturer) like other transmissions, that would make the T-350 200 TIMES easier to re-assemble. Changing the bearing woudln't be that hard, and it wouldn't cost NVG that much extra money. just replace the plastig bearing and retainer with a metal cone bearing and retainer of equivalent size. I am sure the special tranny lube would work just as well on a metal bearing as it does on the plastic ones. IF NVG could even do the SLIGHTEST change to help comsumers with their product, that would be it. Everything else is rock solid (except the differetial.......but I don't know how the reps from NVG would feel about making a contract with Quaife USA for an optional limited slip differential in their transmission.........plus I would think some fo the car manufacturers would hav emore say in that matter i.e. Daimler-Chrysler and General Motors)....just an idea.

Yeah, the plastic needs to go. I would say better syncros, a different set up for the differential, that pin is just too fragile. Has anybody else had different parts break with any frequency at high power loads?

A taller 5th would be nice, how big of a difference is the SOHC Neon trans? .76 compaired to .81? is my memory right or am I totally off?

First of all let me tell everyone that I am just a prototype expeditor over here at NVG. I kinda took this on as a pet project, seeing how I just bought my '02 Neon R/T. However, I do have the resources to get technical questions answered and possibly influencing future designs. Though, that takes alot more than me, as well as, alot more money. I will address the issue of the "plastic"(need I say more), as well as, the taper bearings, and the blocker rings(syncros) and the diff.

Let me start off here, syncros are notorious for being a weak point in high power motors. Thus, race cars skip them.

If you could send any picks of broken parts to me I will have our lead engineer take a look. furman@nvg.com

Just think you could be driving a Getrag. My '91 Stealth spit one all over the ground and at my cost (which is significantly less than most) it hurt my wallet.

FIRST OFF, WELCOME TO 2GNT AND THANKS FOR JOINING TO HEAR OUR PROBLEMS. I am sure you will get plenty of pics of the broken trannys out there because there are enough. Thanks for making an effort for us though. If I knew what all I was looking at I could tell you what was broken in the pile of trannsmission parts I have on my back porch.

Hi NVG Guy,

Welcome. If you want to get some pictures, check out www.asog.net/kiku/bustedtrans

Although the cause of my busted transmission was not gears, it was the clutch. In the process of rebulding one, i got some shots of different parts within the tranny.

I completely agree with the comments made below. If I had to number key upgrades/fixes, it would be:

1) Output shaft roller bearing.
2) Synchros.
3) Differential pin (must be welded if you do not have a quaife).

If you need more pictures or information, i got a whole transmission sitting in my shop opened up gathering dust - gears and all inside.

I've had them both apart. Each time, dog teeth, blocking rings(make them out of better brass or steel) and the input shaft noise. I better bearing will indeed help with the input shaft noise. I have no experience with the output shaft "plastic probs" but they apparently exist. Welding the diff pin in is a good option too! I've had to play the matching game to find blocking rings to work. If you sold a synch. kit that would be pretty popular. Offering a taller 5th gear would be awesome but I don't want to push my luck. Also not mentioned above, it sure would be nice if you guys made a jig to hold the casingso not every part of the transaxle is faaling onto the floor.
BTW WELCOME!!!! This is one of the most intelligent boards you will ever come across.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

Hey Kiku, the pics help... Everyone else, whats exactly happening to the blocker rings? Is the friction material wearing out or are you grinding off dog teeth? Biggest suggestion I do have concerning the blocker rings is(even though it sounds stupid and everyone already knows) Push the clutch to the floor when shifting. Another question I have... How often have these broke on stock engines? As for the diff. there have been instances on high mileage vehicles where the roll pin comes out. I know for a fact that they (engineers) are working on a permanent fix. Though I doubt that involves welding. Reason being, heat distortion and shimming of the side gears during manufacturing. I know we are working on a program right now that uses the side gears from the T350 and the shaft is held on by a C-clip. We are in the testing phase and I'll let you guys know how that comes out.

Its a little hard to get my hands on the actual engineers since they are in Syracuse, NY and I am here in Troy, MI... But I'm working on it. I have a couple of emails out already. Man they're gonna hate me in about a month.

Well in different occasions I have found "excessive" wear on the dog teeth and one occasion I worked on a trans that had relitively low milage and the play was borderline spec between the blocking rings. I feel that the quality of the rings are not acceptable. I have had buddies literrally twist shafts on Ford and Chevy T-5's and have the synchs still in better condition than the ones I've seen come out of my own.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

yeah, i don't have a lot of experience with the internals of a tranny, but i know that occasionally i will grind into first and sometimes second while the clutch is FULLY depressed. actually, now that i think about it, i almost always grind into first in the mornings when it's cold. once the car warms up it seems to be fine though.

I don't know if you guys have heard of Team Rip, but they build trannys for our cars. The link is
http://www.teamrip.com/transmissions.html

I have never bought from them, but they do have some good references. I hope this helps.

I'd hate to burst your bubble but that trans isn't for the 420A motor. It's a 4g63

I'm auto and I haven't had any problems with my trans yet except when I'm comming to a stop the trans (all Chrystler trans) makes that annoying gringing noise! But mine also gives a slight Jolt or Kick before shifting back to first gear.

That sounds exactly like cold clash. Is your car in warranty still? If so I would definatly take it in. Usually what happens under those circumstances is... the fluid in between the friction material and inner cone is not viscous enough to let the blocker ring fully engage the gear, thus, causing clash. I think they use a friction modifier in the lube in which case it may have been too much.

has anyone else had this, and if so, have you gotten satan to fix it? is it something that'll get worse?

Heres the problem, would you rather be twisting shafts or grinding blocker rings? This is the biggest thing I am working on... making spare blocker rings easily available (higher quality blocker rings that is)

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my other vehicle is a "Getrash" 94 Stealth Turbo emoji. I have had to replace the 1'st and second gear syncros in that thing once (last year) and it is that time for it again. I am glad manufacturers like you guys are actually looking at customer inquiries. Even Getrag is getting involved with the 300GT/Stealth turbo community to better suit their needs now emoji.

Yeah, coming in late. Straight gears would be sweet, synchros, do you all do housings, maybe a stiffer lighter one.

So you can't do shorter gear ratio's? I just got beat by an integra (auto) because his car shifted from first to second faster than I did. Basterd almost had him emoji

Yeah, definitely do something about the pin. A few months ago mine decided to back out at the track while I was doing a burnout and exploded in spectacular fashion all over the ground. I have really good pictures, just need to give them to Dino.

I just ran across this thread, My $.02 wish list:

A stronger, limited slip differential that fixes both the open diff and the diff pin. Quaife diffs are excellent, but OH, so expensive, and are actually overkill, as a true Limited Slip would be quite adequate.

An aftermarket equivalent lube that DOES NOT cost 10 bucks a pint.

Affording gear ratio selections is difficult, as every gear change (final or 5th) requires a complete companion shaft or cluster change. In other words, the very construction of the shafts effectively countermands economical gear changes. But if NVH offered either complete transmissions with the ratios and differentials we like, or kits to convert existing ones...

How about scatter shields? Those of us who have had our tranny's explode, you know why I ask.

I had my clutch explode on me, so clutch/flywheel/bellhousing pieces went all over like schrapnel (sp?). Now i need to fix some of the engine harness wires.

Yeah I agree about the scatter shield after seeing some pics of damage from exploding clutches and flywheels. I think even if NVG can't do it SOMEONE should.

from a trans company, what is the advantage of straightcut gears? I think gear kits would be nice so we dont have to track down 355 neon trannys or piece together parts. synchro kits would be great. A small selection of final gears would be excellant also...in the 370's maybe.

A scattershield would be a benefit also.

Thanks for your time to hear us out.

While this is bumped....What happend to NVG guy?

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.
If not. Go here: here

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.
