#1290, "i tried to bolt up a 4g pressure plate to a 420a flywheel without even knowing it"

as you can see, it does not line up. all of the bolts were like this. i'm glad that i didn't take apart my car to try to install it.

what prompted me to check the fitment was motofool's IM to me late last week about some of his customers having problems getting it to line up. i took it out of my back seat, and tried to bolt the thing together outside of the car. the first thing that threw me off was the fact that the 6 pressure plate -> flywheel bolts weren't long enough. i had to take 3 C clamps and had to compress the whole assembly to get it to even begin to reach. this kinda seemed a little fishy.

then i tried to line up all of the holes. they would not line up, no matter how hard i tried. it was as if the holes in the pressure plate needed to be about 1 or 2mm further out from the center. they were spaced almost perfectly along the perimiter, but they just weren't far out enough.

motofool said that he would get back to me about it, but after a few days of no communication i decided to call The1Bill. he said "the fidanza flywheel you got is for a 420A, but the pressure plate and the clutch disk were designed for a 4G63." wow. so weird. no wonder it wouldn't line up. The1Bill continuted to say that he's going to work out an exhange for the correct part. cool.

i'm a little upset. i understand when people make honest mistakes, and i forgive whoever messed up. it's understandable. chances are there was a mix-up between motofool and his clutch builder. whatever. the two pressure plates are SO similar. my fubar combonation of japanese and american parts lined up SO closely, but no cigar. what i'm upset about is that if i really needed this clutch (it starting to REALLY suprise me me how long the OEM clutch stands up at 10 psi of boost), i'd be SOL with no car. no car means no pratical way to get to work. that's a bad thing.

i DO NOT want this to turn into a thread that will bash motofool sort of like the other one in the turbo/nitrous section. the reason i posted this here was to show anyone who has bought one of motofool's non-modular assemblies what my problem has been and to contact him as soon as possible. i also wanted to show for the record how close the 4G63 pressure plate comes to fitting to a 420A flywheel. kind of interesting.

anyways, motofool is a really good guy and i like him. i've seen him being very helpful to a lot of board members - no doubt that he's helped them equally off of the board. IMO he seems to be getting in a little over his head and he's trying to sort things out and just needs some time. The1Bill and him have both been very helpful guys so far and i continue to have hope that they will come through.

that is all.

We ordered a SPEC clutch at our expense to correct this issue. It is on it's way as we speak. Bill (Motofool) asked our clutch builder for prices for the modular and non-modular Eclipse clutches, and the clutch builder gave a price for the modular 2GNT clutch and the price for the non-modular 4G63 clutch. But, to wrap things up, we have a SPEC clutch on the way, and we will try to sell the 4G63 clutch. It's a real bitch to sell a clutch to the 4G63 crowd if it isn't stamped ACT 2600. And people wonder why those cranks grow legs... over a tonne of pressure from that pressure plate. Ah well... such is business!
