95 Eclipse 2L nonturbo which the manual transmission act as if it is in neutral. Have normal pressure on the clutch pedal and can shift gears but acts as if it is in neutral. A friend was able to get it home by speed shifting it and it ran ok but unable to shift with the clutch. Any sugestions on what is happening?

Update on the situation. I have removed the Tranny and found alot of material that looks like cotton shredded up inside of the bell housing. It appears to be clutch material. Wondering if changing the clutch will fix he problem or if something else is also happening.
