First, when was the last time you flushed / filled the tranny?
Does the car ever not go to the next gear when it should?

I changed my transmission fluid about 2000 miles ago, I never did a flush. My car does go into the next gear perfect. I had I try to trace the problem a little better from 0-20mph If I slowly accelerate I don't hit the gas hard or if let go of the gas the car would shudder between 0-20mph.

After I finished installing a shift kit I started to have this problem. I was looking at some other post and I was wondering could it be that one of the accumulator piston seal was not installed properly.

I had the same problem with my 98 GS. It started after I changed the ATX oil and filter. A mechanic told me it was because I changed the oil while it was cold. Apparently you are supposed to warm the oil to operating temp before draining it. Of course, changing the oil only drains about 2 quarts from the trans (valve body and torque converter oil remains). I did another drain and fill while it was warm and that seemed to have solved my problem.

I think my trans does this to.. I have a 4g64 2.4l and im not sure what trans it is yet besides a 4 speed automatic front wheel drive.(F4A23 ?) When i first start it up in the mornings it takes a lil bit more rpms then normal for it to move in reverse outta my parking spot then when it goes to shift into second it does what your describing, a slight slip catch slip then kicks back to normal. But after i get down the road its fine and will not do it all again all day unless it sits for hours. I noticed when im in park with it idling i think i can hear a fluid movement sound, kinda like a slurping sound coming from the trans area. Im bent on the idea its the pump. I thought maybe a seal but it only does it before the fluids had a chance to be circulated through the trans, then after that its fine. It has done this before and after a trans filter and fluid change. Problem has not got worse. Car shows 178k miles. I noticed also going down hill the down shift is a lil drastic, almost like being thrown into neutral. Would love to know why it does this.

My 1998 rs has the same transmission code on firewall and I'm running the 420a. this is odd? but my atx filter is cross reference for the a604.

Try autozone/advanceauto website to compare atx filter they all could be the same model.

My car is a 1998 eclipse spyder gs
