My mother-in-law is in town and she has a '97 Talon ESi A/T
After a couple weeks into her visit her timing belt broke and I have spent the better part of my last few weekends rebuilding the top end of her engine.
Finally got all that done this past Saturday and now it runs great aside from a small issue with the timing (Ended up being one tooth off after everything was put back together! GRRRR).
I do have one question regarding the A/T in stock form... How does it perform? For a "Sporty" car it seems a bit sluggish... I have no experience driving or working on a DSM prior to her timing belt breaking so my learning curve has had to be very steep with this car.
As it stands the transmission shifts VERY smoothly from one gear to another, which is good. No surging during shifts from P to D, P to R, or R to D, which is also good. There just seems to be a lack of torque in the low end, no get up and realy take off power. And it seems to have a bit of trouble dropping gears when you floor it at higher speeds. Is this expected behavior, or is something up with the tranny?
She has to drive the car from Connecticut back to Michigan in a couple of weeks, so I want to get it as tip-top as possible before we send her off...

nope this is common.... remember this is the same trans as in the caravans... not exactly very punchy if u get my drift... for the long haul tho i would do a flush /filter for her just to make sure everything is (tip top) for her. there are ways to make it give her that extra punch if she into it. just dont know how much work your willing to do

Once I got the timing belt fixed, it pepped up a bit. That issue was causing idle problems and overall power problems with it being one tooth off.
There was also a pretty substantial vacuum leak... When I put everything back together last time I'm pretty sure I knocked one of the hoses off the vacuum canister for the cruise control when I was tightening the tensioner bolt for the alternator.
That stupid plastic vacuum box under the intake manifold is the cruise control vacuum canister as far as I know. And now the cruise works... heh
I was pretty pissed off about the way the car ran last weekend, but now that all the issues are fixed it really purrs. It's not FAST, but it's my mother-in-law... She doesn't need it to be FAST.
Before I fixed the timing belt issue she had a CEL code 31, EVAP System Fault.
I think this might have been due to the vacuum leak. I'll give it a week or so and see whats up.

or the purge solenoid..... check it out... under the front pass fender . bolted to the fender facing towards u behind the evap canister (big black box) ... unbolt it remove the lil rubber/foam cover and check to make sure its not cracked or leaking. ive had to change mine x2. same cell.

yes it's pretty much normal, at leat its the same in my car, all the way down to the not wanting to down shift on the highway, i usually just push the o/d button if i want to pass

Theres a really simple and quick mod for giving the car just a bit more speed, nothing fancy, but it really makes the car feel different, more responsive, more aggressive, and a bit faster through all the gears.
Do a search on the final drive gear mod, I just put mine in a few weeks ago and it made more of a difference than I expected. I'm pretty sure it works for the Talons.
