so i just spent like all last night putting a star stage II turbo in my '96 eclipse. I have it set at 7 psi. I don't yet have a transmission cooler or temp gauge installed (this is on my to do list because i just read that i need them) . I was so excited to test drive it, but the test did not go well. The turbo seems to be working fine, but it's not shifting above like 3rd gear and the shifts seem to lag (shifts really late i guess compared to preturbo). I am freaking out now because i am scared that my transmission is ruined already and i have only gone around the block: Help me because i'm gonna cry why is it doing this?

TCA transaxle control module could be bad? Also did you re-use your torque converter? It's just a thought...maybe could of been your first trannys problem if it was bad or going bad. Also I figured I'd ask if you re-used the torque converter from the old tranny because I know it's sometimes extra to buy it from the yard and it has been known to re use the old one to save 50 bucks. If you and your bro did it might be the issue.Just my thoughts to help out ....don't overlook the obvious though fluid level and filter.
A transmission control module (TCM) provides fully adaptive electronic control of all shifting. Shifts are very smooth because the electronic control senses input and output speed changes as shifts occur and adjusts hydraulic pressure accordingly. Adaptive electronic control provides up shifts and down shifts with a smoothness unattainable with strictly hydraulic transmissions. In so doing, adaptive control makes the power train feel responsive without harshness. These controls inherently compensate for changes in engine torque or friction element characteristics to provide consistently smooth shifts for the life of the transmission.
The TCM considers operating conditions such as ambient and transmission temperature, engine loading changes caused by climbing grades, loss of engine power at high altitude due to lower air density, and engagement of automatic speed control in determining when shifts should occur. On up-grades, "anti-cycling" logic assures that down shifts do not occur cyclically. After a down shift to Third occurs, the TCM determines the torque required to maintain the existing speed and/or acceleration level and only allows an up shift if the same torque level is available in Fourth gear. When speed control is engaged, down shifts on up-grades occur somewhat earlier than with driver control of the throttle to assure that speed is maintained.
Engagement of overdrive (Fourth gear) is controlled by a push button on the side of the shifter. When the switch is in the OFF position, the transaxle will not shift to overdrive and an O/D OFF light in the instrument cluster is illuminated. Having overdrive off makes driving smoother in traffic at low and moderate speeds where overdrive is not needed. With overdrive off, upshifts to Third gear occur at the same speed as in overdrive.

Well i had the last transmission put in some where and i don't know if they reused the torque converter? is it something that i should have replaced for sure of is there a way to check it? And as far as the TCA how would i check if that is the issue or not? Would this probably be something i am gonna have to bring in to get checked out or something that i can check on my own? If it is the TCA or torque converter that is messed up, then is the transission toast arleady for sure too or could it still be okay? And thank you again soooo much

As far as the torque converter goes if that in itself is bad it doesn't mean your entire tranny is.I'm speaking from a mistake I made when I swapped trannys and re used the torque converter.I put a new one in and blam problem solved. As far as the TCM goes there are some trouble codes it will throw code 45 and 66...is your check engine light on? as far as testing it I don't know how except to get another one and replace it to see if that fixes the problem.maybe ask the yard if you can borrow it to just see if thats the problem and if it is tell them you'll give them and extra ten for letting you try it out. Sometimes it's just a simple problem though maybe a plugged tranny filter, bumped the TCM plug on the tranny putting on the turbo in.low on fluid maybe. These signs will help indicate if it is your tranny is shot Does your fluid smell burnt, check the dipstick in the day is there any sign of metallic residue on it.There are some thing you and your bro can check before you decide to take it to the shop.Buy chiltons and or haynes and the removal and install of the TCM is in there.YOU CAN DO it lol. I wish I could help you out more but it's hard for me to know with out seeing it ya know lol.Maybe one of the tranny gurus here will pop there heads in and give you some more advice.

ahhhh i have the same exact problem....i just replaced the torque converter in it but it still slips like crazy....i dont think it goes in 3rd or overdrive. Can anyone help????

This may sound dumb, but did you make sure the torque converter was pushed on all the way??? I had to spin mine around till I found the 'right' spot for it to slide on the rest of the way.
Check your tranny fluid as well, are you running low?

it seemed in all the way....but if it wasn't would i still be able to tighten the tranny to the engine??? My fluid level seems fine. Could there be any sensors that might cause this. I might not of plugged them all in.

If it wasn't in all the way you wouldn't be able to bolt up the block to the tranny, so I think your fine there. Go over your sensors again.

thanks everyone for your help. Especially madhatter for the extra time you took to explain what the heck you were talkin about, lol. I took a look at the tranny yesterday and found out that as you had suggested one of the sensors was disconnected. I plugged it in and now I have a fully functional transmission and turbo!!!! Yay I love turbo!!! So yeah to the other person having this problem, check all the connections i think there are 6 of them and make sure they are all fully connected, good luck.
