#3039, "HELP, quick!!"

Friend of mine has an auto V6 Sebring. He IM'ed me a few minutes ago with this:

<19:36> Defiant103: ok
<19:36> Defiant103: so here is what has been happening
<19:36> Defiant103: i'll pull awawy from the curb, and my tranny will just die and go to neutral
<19:36> Defiant103: today
<19:37> Defiant103: it has been doing it when i hit the breaks
<19:37> Defiant103: or come to a complete stop
<19:37> Defiant103: randomly
<19:38> MajinVejitaXV: Hm...it allows you to free rev?
<19:38> Defiant103: exactly
<19:39> MajinVejitaXV: Strange...I'd say it could be your transmission's clutches or the TQ convertor. I honestly am in the dark about autos, though.
<19:39> MajinVejitaXV: I know that model is very problematic for a fact
<19:39> Defiant103: yeah well its got me afraid to go anywhere near a busy street...I dont wwant to be that guy who has to get out and push
<19:40> MajinVejitaXV: I'll hit up the people in my auto community, see if I can get a clear diagnosis

Help? He's gotta be at his reserves duty and has to have his car up and running. I'm ignorant about autos, help?

-Corey

ya i agree with the Soul man..... it sounds electrical..... tell your buddy to go down and get his ecu scanned... and ask 'em to test the solenoids.... also check his tps....out tranny bases its shift patterns upon the tps..... hard to give a good diagnosis w/ such little info...
hope this helps

Thanks for the help. Like I said, I'm a manual so I couldn't offer much help personally. He ended up taking it to Chrysler, and they ended up dropped his tranny pan to find...chunks of brass and clutch, apparently.

Ah well, he got raped on a new tranny, because he didn't call me so I could help him out by sending him to Kise or checking here, but oh well.

Thanks again,
Corey

well I had the same basic problem in my trans. It was just 1.5 quarts low on fluid. Everytime I went around a corner in went into neutral. I say to check that first. Then if it is full I say electrical too. He should have it scanned for codes even if u aren't actually showing a cel. My trans has never actually given me a cel but has had it share of problems that a scan tool picked up. If it says loss of prime, then it is low on fluid.

Yeah, but literally there were chunks of his internals in the tranny pan, so I don't think it would have been a simple code emoji

Still, thanks for the help. It just makes me even more glad that I'm a manual, personally. These damn transmissions seem too problematic.
