#2842, "Twitching gears at 5.000 rpm only"

Hi guys!

I have this weird problem: my third (and partially second) gear starts to twitch (losing and gaining about 500 rpm) at 5.000 rpm and stops at 5.500 rpm; otherwise the car is working without any problem. My car is Eclipse 1997, 2.0 non turbo Automatic Transmission.

Does anybody know why this happens nad how to repair it?

Thank you very much.

could be the torque convertor locking and unlocking??
But in general when you start to have funky tranny problems you should get a flush and refill of the tranny fluid. that will probably solve the problem.

Torque converter lock up was my first guess too, mcgvr. most likely what it is. Find the thread about the TC lock up mod and install it. Turn the lock up off and see if the same thing happens!

I changed the transmission fluid about 3500 miles ago, also filter, so I guess the fluid is not the problem.

What is mcvgr.?
And where is torque converter located?
Sorry if I ask stupid questions but if I know where to look at, my friend can help (he's mechanic).
Thanks.

If your friend is a mechanic he should know where to look.

Im not gunna explain where the torque converter is or what it does in great detail but here goes :

(TC)

There you go. The TC is in between the engine and transmission. You can't see it without taking off maybe an acces plate or taking the engine and transmission and seperating them.

SEARCH for the way to do the torque converter lock up mod.

Found out what mcvgr is: I saw it was a reply from him.. ehehe... am I stupid... I ought to be blond... emoji

OK, more exactly:
when I press gas and rpm reaches 5000, then the engine twitches to 5500 rpm, then back to 5000 or a bit less, and then (if I still hold the gas), the engine works normally again. It seems like a hole between 5000 and 5500 rpm. Very strange. This does particularly in third gear.
Is it more clear now? Thanks.

That's for explanation, but I am still curious; I am not native english speaker, so I have a slight problem: what did you mean by torque converter locking up? What exactly did you mean by that? Can you explain a bit? Thanks.

And you said it is normal: what did you mean by that? I think that this should be repaired, don't you?

the map sensor is on the intake manifold on the pass side.... its facing up and is black in color should have 3 wire going to it.... check the wiring all the way back to the ecu to make sure u have no shorts..... if not... probe the map sensor (not the black/brown wire) i believe its the yellowish one anyway probe that with a volt meter and give the voltage readings to us like this
(just an example not actual readings *it should not look like this*)
map voltage rpm throtle %
5v 4500 wide open
3.5 2500 1/2

and so on
id do idle,1/4, 1/2, 3/4 , and wide open

just to give an idea
now one wire u should be getting 5v constantly that is the computer's referance wire...the other would very....and the black/brown wire should be grounded ie 0v.
hope this helps a lil and be sure to post this too
also if u can do the tps for me
tps=throttle position sensor (located on the throttle body back, top sensor. wired the same way..

SEARCH if you want an explanation on TC lock up, it's way too much to explain in a post.

If I wern't so lazy i'd do like I normally do and search for you, but ive already contributed to too many TC threads to keep finding them.

No, no, it's not overdrive. And even if it were, it cuts at around 6500 rpm.
