#2817, "Power Limit on A604?"

At what torque/horsepower does the ATX die/start failing? Friend of mine wants to build up his Sebring, with the same transmission but a V6 engine, and wants to know. I think I saw a figure awhile back, but search doesn't bring up anything for me.

Thanks,
Corey

I think its hard to put a number to it. Plenty of people blow up stock A604's at stock HP. Other people get away with 19 psi of boost on stock A604's (for a while). I think that fully built A604's hold up pretty well. I think that Ryan95I4 sheared off a shaft (or something) at around 350 ft/lbs of torque. When you shear off parts, you've pretty much reached the limit. The aftermarket mainly covers soft parts (clutches, seals). Hard parts (shafts, gears) are often only available stock. ASOG has a good bit of info on the A604. With a stage I or II kit, I'd use a trans cooler and shift kit. With a built engine, I'd want a built trans (unless you have alternate transportation).

I plan to keep the boost reasonable after I drop the built engine in (9-12 psi). I have a spare trans that I plan to build up and install. Then, I'll feel better about pushing more boost (15+ psi). I'll be installing the engine in a couple weeks. If you want to check it out, I'll be in Gainesville...not too far away.

im pushing 15 psi through mine, been a few thousand miles. i hardly ever launch, but i do have a pretty heavy foot. higher stall converter, cooler, kit, final drive, just about all the trans mods.

i know thedawg has been pushing the same through his for about 10k miles.

the a604 has two clutch hubs, UD and OD: i sheared the gear shaft off the OD clutch hub -- so when the tranny tries to shift into 3rd or 4th, the clutch hub isnt connected to anything and just spins freely.

Im putting a 5spd in the car now (it should actually be back on the road this weekend) -- after blowing up a built and too expensive a604, i vowed to never put another dime into an a604 or a604 equipped car emoji

My buddy is a tech at Brevard County Dodge (titusville, fl) and the trans tech there said he does infact have heavier duty clutch hubs, I however know nothing about them or have ever heard of upgraded hard parts -- if youre interested, I can get you my friend's email and he can get you in contact with that trans tech.

My trans mods:
Hughes HD3000 Torque Convertor (3K+ RPM Stall), Raybestos Race Clutch Packs and Steel Plates and Blue Plate Special Gaskets, Shiftkit, Aluminum Accumulator Pins, Updated Shift Solenoid, Trans Fluid Cooler

You will need a 97+ TCU to take advnatge of a higher stall -- the 95 tcu sees it as slip and goes into limp mode (no good for racing, but makes for some killer 2nd gear burnouts  )

I was running 18psi on a s16g when i killed the trans. If anyone is looking for a great condition stock atx to install or build up, i will have one for sale as well as the 3K+ rpm stall convertor -- email me if your interested -- sorry, but my built atx is being built up again for use in another car, altho i may have some of those parts used in its build up to give to who ever buys the stock atx from me

So, did you wire in a '97 TCU to your '95 car? Difficult? Plug right in? Did you re-use the '95 ECU? Care to part with your TCU? I might be interested.

No, I never replaced the TCU, which is why the car never went better than 14.10's (cant get a decent ET if your coming off the line at idle like grandma -- 2.6 60's dont help ET's, heh)

If you need a 95 tcu, ill have one tho, heh

sorry about the mixup on location

if you want to use a 96 or 97-up (forgot which year it changed) in an earliear car you have to wire the newer style tcm connector onto your harness, and you have to have both pinouts to do that. not TOOO hard, but i guess it might be a PITA if your tcm is in your dash : /
