#2409, "Is it alright to drive in the Low Gear?"

I am curious if it is alright to drive in the Low gear under normal driving conditions. Is'nt it a little faster anyway for acceleration? Would it damage my tranny if I was racing in the low gear? Speaking of racing, which is the best approach for good take offs.

Thanks In Advance

I wouldn't call it the smartest things to do. If your just that bored, then go for it. I would get a tranny cooler if I were you. I would also start savibg some money too.

@ the track I went quicker by starting in the 2 position so I could get a little more rpm out of the motor before 3rd when the convertor locks up. But as for low I wouldnt do it.

i've been shifting my car from L to 2nd to drive o.d off to od on for a year now wit absolutely no probs. tranny temp rises much quicker so i suggest u get a trans temp guage along wit a cooler other than that you should be fine. it really is nice to downshift and not have to use the brakes barely at all, but its pointless when ur flooring it cuz the tranny will always shift right before 6500, no matter what u do.

i use low when i autocross because it always keeps you in the lowest possible gear and helps out with braking a little. but on the street?? it really doesnt do a damn thing for acceleration, it just basically rules out part throttle upshifts. also, i dont think it will shift into 4th in low.

imo its only good for autocross or traffic jams when you dont want to leave first.
