#2297, "Tranny LOCKS UP in reverse... strange."

My transmission starting locking up while driving in reverse. I'll put it in reverse gear and start to back up... but after 2 or 3 feet, the tranny locks up and the wheels lock up too. I can put it in neutral or another gear and then back into reverse and backup another couple feet and it'll lock up again. I've learned to backup without locking up by switching between reverse and neutral over and over until I've backed up far enough to get out. All other tranny operations are fine. Fluid level is good and tranny looks/sounds fine.

Here's another explanation: My throttle cable broke yesterday and I pulled into a driveway with an incline. To get out, I put the tranny in neutral and we started pushing the car backwards. The tranny locked up again, in neutral! To unlock it, we put it in PARK and rocked the car front to back a couple time until in broke loose. We had to do this repeatedly every couple feet until we were fully backed out.

This is strange. Any ideas as to what is causing the problem or where to look first?

maybe your shifter cable needs some adjustment, maybe its going into park or something .
Other than that it would be a mechanical problem that would cause that I guess, maybe your solenoid pack is dirty/stuck or something too.

those are my only guesses

Hopefully I can find out tomorrow when I do some engine work. I'm going to pull the valve body to make sure everything's looking good and check the solenoid pack. This tranny is going to be replaced soon. I'll be using the A670 or NVT-350 here soon... I haven't made up my mind yet. When I do that, I'll be selling my 3500-stall torque converter.

Why replace the A604? So I can get more of my power to the ground.

another one bites the dust! doh! another built a/t going bye bye... we are becoming few and far between doug. are you not happy with how the car is preforming as is currently? i know my setup is going to be almost exactly like yours once its back out of storage...

anyway, i was actually thinking the same thing a while back, but there arent too many a/t's pushing a lot of power, so i figured what the heck.

back on topic though, did you figure out what your problem with the tranny locking up was?

>>are you not happy with how the car is preforming as is currently?

The setup I have now is great! Expect for the fact that reverse has gone out. I figure that now is a good time to take the drivetrain to the next level. The A604 functions well, can take lots of power, but also loses a lot of power during the transfer. The TCM programming is some of the problem... it gets confused when it sees HP input numbers. I'm having a hard time making the choice between NVT-350 and A670.

You'll love it!

I haven't messed with it yet. I hope it's nothing major but I have a feeling that is it.
