not sure, but a black color does absorb more heat...

do you have a tranny temp gauge?

Yes, any air-diffusion cooler will lose a lot of efficiency if you paint it. You've effectively insulated it.

IMO, I'd dip the thing in paint stripper and clean it off.

But thats probably a black anodized finish. Thats a different animal all together. Heat is tranferred by a variety of means simultaneously. Coatings and surface finish play a role in a couple of those means. It gets complex enough that I'd have to read up on it before saying too much. But, if I remember correctly, black anodized aluminum works well for radiating heat.
