#1929, "me (97 rs a/t) vs 98 gs m/t ?"

I have a 97 rs auto with CIA, and a aftermarket cat-back exhaust as only performance mods. I also run on 17's with 2 12's in the back and the spare. The stereo equipment and tire can be taken out tho.

He has a stock 98 gs 5-speed and he's a decent driver.

Is it possible for me to beat him? He talks a lot of smack but i've driven with him before and watched him go up to 80 or so as fast as he could and it wasnt that much faster than me.

Also, i searched the archives and read about "power braking" in an auto to launch? Can someone please explain it to me? Just hold down the brake and rev low, then off the brake and punch it? heh i dont really understand.

He's going to beat you, and beat you pretty good. With your mods most A/T 2gnt's run mid/low 17's. The 17" wheels wont help you either. Good luck either way!

The biggest problem you're going to have is during the shifts. He will pull on you significantly during the shifts since the goddamn auto is so slow at shifting. There is a slight difference in power since autos suck a litte more away, but the shifting is going to hurt you. I know, I've got an auto... emoji You can solve A LOT of that with the final drive mod (.6 sec. off ET!!)

MODS:

HRC 16g turbo kit, Spearco custom FMIC, Custom IC piping, VT rebuilt engine: Custom 8.8:1 compression CP pistons, Eagle connecting rods, Melling oil pump, Clevite bearings, 370cc injectors, Vortech S-FMU, Apexi N-1 catback exhaust, AFX UDP, Autometer boost gauge, fuel pressure gauge, EGT gauge, Corbin's digital A/F gauge, Tokico Blue shocks, Tein springs (1.5" drop), 18" Konig Verdicts rims, VIS stock-style Carbon fiber hood

Raced him last night and won by a decent margin.

From a complete stop, he told me to hit it because we both figured he'd walk me. Did a decent 2500 rev with foot on the brake and then let off and punched it, and took off nicely with a half car length on him. He hit it and immediately caught up and passed me by a car length and a half. Then i redlined and came up and pulled on him a lot. Took a car length lead before he made another pull and evened. Just kept slowly pulling after that and he never caught up. Raced to about 90 mph. Surprising win for sure.

Sorry its kinda a war story but i kept it short hehe

I seemed to lose by a lot on the shifts like you said but killed him pretty bad when the top end of the power band came in. So maybe I'm a little abnormally fast? or perhaps the more logical answer : he's not as good of a driver as i thought?

Who knows. Either way, good fight - good night emoji

Cool. Good job. the problem with our autos, like i said before, is not with the power difference (which isn't much anyway). You just lose ground on shifts since the sutos shift so fukin lazy. Happy you won though.

Everything said about the shifts here are opposite when I'm running someone with M/T. Just about every time I beat someone with M/T was because of my auto.
It usually starts by them getting the jump, then whem they shift to 2nd I get back even, then when they shift to 3rd I jump in front, and so on.
I'm not talking shit by any means, I just notice that most of my gains are when people shift, and I don't think its the driving, cause there has been to many for all of them to suck at it, and so I know can drive like a motherfucker. Does this not seem to happen with anyone else?

If this guy can shift he's got you beat, but if he sux at powershifting then you might have a chance at him.
