I know that if you can seal off the rear part of a front-firing box from the front, it will go damn loud. How would we do it in our car?? Has anyone done it? I don't mean I want a wall, I just want something that would come right up to the bottom of the hatch.

sorry, its an all-or-nothing deal. front firing boxes (while good looking and good for space) run into a lot of cancellation, as the waves are bouncing everywhere. in a non-hatch, its not as much of a problem, as a reenforced rear deck (and the back glass) help to focus the waves, but in a hatchback you HAVE to wall it off to get good SPL. i would suggest that if you want to build a box in the rear seat area, just face the subs backward into the the hatch.
edit: of yeah, if your concern is visability, you can always add a plexi window to the wall, thats what i did. theres some picks on here somewhere, ill dig them up if you want to see.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it. I thought the thing was that, by reducing the cabin space to pressurize, it would get louder, and if you load up on the sound deadener to absorb the rear-firing wavelength it would still get decent loud. But the more I think about it the less sense this idea makes. So a rear-firing box it is.

its not the rear (from the back of the sub) wave that matters, its that the front wave bounces all over the place, the interacts with the rest of the wave from the sub to cause strange dips and bumps in the frequency responce. imagine it this way...
you throw five rocks (represents 5 waves, like a 5hz tone) into a pond. if you throw them into the middle of the pond, the waves produced bounce into each other and disperse in a random pattern. if you throw them near the shore (where theres a barier), the waves tend to "line up" more easily and reinforce one another, sending the waves out into the lake, rather then scattering them everywhere. if you want to search for more info, you can google for "slot loading" or "corner loading".
