ok i am thinking about putting one 12 and an amp in my car in the near future and i am trying to think of where to install it so that i dont eliminate too much, if any, of the space i have in my car. i am thinking of having both custom put in the spare tire well with plexiglass over the top of them so i can still put stuff over them if need be. my only question is, would that affect the sound at all? im not looking for a setup that will win competitions, just something that will sound better than it does now and give me a little bump in the trunk. thanks for any help.

I wouldnt mess with the spare tire well honestly. As cool as it looks I have never done it for one reason. I knew that as soon as I would do it I would be drivin down the road and I would get a blow out. But if you tell me what kind of sub you want I can calculate the measurements of the box and air space that the sub was intended to be used in. When I try and do a system again I have been thinking about mounting a custom box/fiberglass setup in the incave inside of the trunk on the left side. That is where JL made their custom enclosure to integrate into our cars. Let me know by e-mail if you need help figuring out dimensions and stuff. It would be beneficial to both of us and I'm sure quite a few others.

well i dont have my spare tire in there anyway so i wouldnt really be sacrificing it. i have seen it done once and i think it was on wickedesi's car. ill hit you up with an email later on to see if you can figure out the dimensions for me. thanks for the help.
basically what you have to do is fiberglass the entire bottom of the spare tire well, and then make a baffle for the front and then join the fiberglass bit to the MDF baffle. You can make it flush mounted with a router so it'll look badass with your cover off, by double-layering the MDF and cutting a larger hole (probably 12") on the top piece, so your sub won't poke up. Then cut a baffle to the dimensions of the trunk, use the stock spare tire well cover as a template, you can get away with using thin MDF for this (in fact, you could probably just use the stock piece anyway), and then glue another piece of MDF on the bottom. The top piece should have a 14" hole, the bottom a 12" hole, and then get a nice round 14" circle and cut slats in it or something so that even with the cover on the bass will still come through.
i did it and it sounded like shit. i made a piece of mdf to go around the bottom trunk panels and then cut out the hole for the sub and it sat right into the spare tire well. sounded like absolute shit. it want to actually have a decent sound, you gotta seal the box. it just sounds like a bunch of air poofing around really. i would suggest making the side box that goes on the side of the trunk. i would the sub on the pass side cuz i think there is more room, then the amp on the left if there is room, or just screw it into the board thing that covers the tire well.
ORRRRRRRRRRR, i could make you a fiberglass enclosure and you would be way in then!
if you are set on putting it in the tire well, i would lay down some fglass resin throughout the whole tire well, and then lay down a shitload of dynamat in the well i guess. still might sound bad though unless you seal the box you make for it.
like i said though, i could make you a simple sealed fiberglass box to hold the sub and the amp.
