I don't know if it's what you are looking for but Alpine makes a motorized 7" DVD/CD platyer that has pulse touch. When you press the buttons on the screen it makes a clicking sound and feels like a real button, really sweet, but I'm not sure that's what you mean.

I have a 10.4" touchscreen that I'm trying to sell. http://www.arbytech.com/carmp3.php was my inspiration, but lack of funds put this project on hold. It would take some fiberglassing to get it to fit, but it would be so pimp. Let me know if you're interested.

I read up alot on screens on mp3car.com a while ago. It seemed everyone liked getting the Lilliput screens off e-bay then getting a touchscreen overlay for them. I highly recommend just getting a regular display and getting an overlay for it instead of a screen that has a built in touchscreen. My friend did this and it works perfectly and was much cheaper.

no. not if you want it to look good. VGA is much higher quality than your standard dumpy ebay lcd monitor. VGA is computer graphics capable whereas those 100 dollar lcds on ebay are fuzzy and dim tv quality screens. Why would you want to cheap out and not even be able to read the text onscreen? No thanks.

Hey, sorry for the delay, I went home for the weekend. Anyways, its a 10.4" NEC tft display with an ELO touchscreen overlay and controller. These ELO overlays have acoustic wave technology (somethin like that anyways) which is supposedly the best overlay you can buy.

Touchscreen overlay

Power inverter and touchscreen controller

Front of the screen (battery there for size comparison)

Back of screen with 31 pin hirose connector.

All this is missing is an lcd controller, which can be bought for around 60 bucks. (Computer to lcd controller, lcd controller to screen)

Lilliput does make decent VGA screens, and you're right that's what you should get. I didn't mean buy the cheapest Lilliput LCD on ebay. I meant like one of these:

Is that the 7" or 8"? I really want to install an carputer but I also want to get a new car next year so I figure I might as well wait till then. did you really have to f-up the dash to fit that, or will it fit without any cutting of the dash? could you easily convert back to stock?

Thats the 7". there is no way a 8" will fit without losing the AC controls and hacking away at the center console metal of the car itself. The way I made mine uses only the plastic HVAC cover. Therefore it is removable and the carputer resides directly behind it. It was a tough fit.

Sweet, looks like I'll just build my carputer now. I was going to mount it in the trunk anyways so the only thing that would be in the dash is the screen.

http://www.arbytech.com/carmp3.php . That link shows pics of all the steps to get something bigger in there, but it looks like it takes a shitload of time.

Ehh I wouldnt go the way he did. Just because its bigger doesnt mean its better. Ask your girlfriend about that one, lol.

He used to post alot at mp3car.com but has since pretty much moved on.

He had to hack the entire center console piece down to the shifter. Lose the cig lighter. and refab all that. Just to have a mediocre monitor with no more than 640X480 res. and the angle he had to put it in is about 45degrees which makes reading it extremely difficult. I have a bad enough time with glare on mine, but his must have been pretty much unuseable.

I figured if you were gonna hack the console up a little, its pretty much the same amount of work after that. He had said that glare wasn't a problem because it was so low, that the sun never hit it. And I think that watching a movie, or trying to control a media player with the extra size would be beneficial. My girlfriend told me bigger was better??
