^^^aaron got it. its also called a "line level converter".
it wont sound HORRIBLE, but it could sound better w/ a new headunit running a direct low-level (RCA) signal to the amp. LOL, my first system was a stock tape deck in an '89 dodge colt, running to the converter, to a jensen amp, to a box in the back with one 12" MTX and four 1" motorola tweets (yes, i said motorola, lol). it was still loud as shit, and sounded fairly good for what it was, though i had the soundstage completely behind me.

My buddy did the same thing with his Bose system in his Maxima.. it sounded like shit at first but once tweaked it sounds beautiful! still have a little bass to cut out of the Bose speakers since they are self amplified but his car looks way better with that stock headunit than it would with a single din cd player.
