Ok electronics experts, I need to check my work to make sure I am doing everything right. I want to black out the blinkers on my Talon (not with tint spray, that's illegal here, I want to paint them black) so I need my brake lights to blink. Here is what I am wanting to do...



This should work right? I would clip the brake wire, hook up the end from the brake pedal to the common, and hook the end going to the brake lights to the normally closed point on the relay. That way the brake light could operate normally. Then the blinker + and - would energize the coil and since the normally open point on the relay is empty, the brake lights would go off. So every time the blinker would have been blinking, the brake light would shut off. If anything is wrong, let me know.

that only works if you turn your blinker on while braking. what happens if your brake light is not on and you turn on your blinker? there will be no light for the relay to turn 'off'.

is this a dual filament or single filament bulb you are rewiring for the blinker? i forget how the eclipse tails work.. i know there's like 2 duals and one single or something. it gets confusing b/c you hafta account for when your running lights are on at nite too. i think it was like the brakes and blinker light up everything while the running lights only activate one filment. or something like that.

you could make a similar setup to what you have with two relays. keep your current setup except switch the 'from brake' and 'to brake' wires. you want the common (30) pin going to the brake light. now when the relay is triggered by the blinker, the brake light will be connect to pin 87a.

now here's the tricky part. you want pin 87a to show nothing when the brake lights are on and +12v when the brake lights are not on. the way you do this is to wire up the second relay to provie +12v to pin 87a of the first relay in a similar fasion to your original setup (except it will be triggered by the brake signal wire rather than the blinker signal). now when your brakes are on the relay will function as you initially planned. when the brakes are off the lights will be off until it receives a signal from the blinker. at this point the first relay connects the brake like to the second relay which will be powered as long as the brake lights are not active.

1st relay:
30 to brake light
87 to pin 30 of 2nd relay
87a + brake signal
86 + blinker signal
85 ground

2nd relay:
30 to pin 87 of 1st relay
87 open
87a +12v (constant)
86 + brake signal
85 ground

I didn't even think about that. Both blinker and brake are dual filament I believe. Anybody have a better idea about how to do this? I want the whole brake light to blink like it used to on my old Cavalier.

I would bet without looking that the blinkers are only single filament since the only time they are on is when the turn signal or hazards are on. They don't light up any other time. I want to do the same thing and this is the easy solution that I came up with. I'm not sure if it will work but in theory it will...just a fitting issue. I was just going to cut a hole and stick the blinker bulb through. Cut it the same shape with a dremel and then get a rubber o-ring so no moisture gets in. Know what I mean? There are a couple people on the board that have painted that section. Blizare and Jason_Esi I think are two.

Bump...anybody else have a suggestion, I really want to do this soon, but I really want the whole brake light to blink. Help! TIA...

Just in case any other Talon owners wanted to do this, I made this diagram to help out. You will need 4 relays total, 2 for each side. Also, the stock flasher MAY have to be replaced with an electronic one because relays don't put any load on the stock flasher. I will let everyone know if I end up having to use one or not. Here is the pic:

Good info, points.

BTW, Talon's and Eclipses have different bulb setups (the outside bulbs are dual filament and the inside bulb is single filament after doing a Talon to Eclipse conversion, so in other words, their is a lot of rewire work to make them work like stock eclipse lights.
