#6532, "Best 6.5" speakers for rap/r&b for under $100?"
Jul-06-03 10:21 PM by eclipse804

Hey all, I was wondering what you guys recommend for 6.5" speakers (front doors) if I will mainly be listening to hip hop and r&b, slow jams, some rock, etc. I'm planning to push about 50 watts to each speaker with an amp, and my main goal is to have the speakers ONLY and no subs (to save weight). I would like to spend under $100, and of course the cheaper the better as long as it's decent.

I was leaning towards Infinity Kappa 62.5i ($85 shipped) but the highs sounded too harsh - the Infinity Reference 6002i ($63 shipped) actually sounds better to me it seems. I also heard some Eclipse speakers that sounded better than the Kappas but were $179 retail at the Good Guys. I'm not too into car audio, but just want good sound quality with decent mid and low bass so that I don't need to run subs. Thanks!

I mean for under 100 online/ebay etc. For example, the Infinity Kappa 62.5 retails for 150, but online you can get it for under 100. Aren't the Kappas considered decent?

if it makes you feel better for spending less money, i agree with you 100%....ive never really liked the kappas.

my personal favs. as far as 6.5" coaxials are the cerwin-vega "vega" series. im not sure if they even make them anymore or how much they cost though, lol.

Hmm but do you like the References more than the Kappas? Do you know what major stores carry Cerwin-vega so I could listen to em? Any other comments anyone?

In the beginning of the thread, you stated that you wanted 6.5" speakers for rap and hip-hop style music. You also stated that you wanted a speaker that would keep you from having to add subs.

I'm sorry my friend, but if you want bass from rap/hip-hop, you will need subs in the vehicle. 6.5" speakers can't reproduce the subs frequencies that rap music plays. These frequencies focus between 50-80hz, which is below the frequency range any 6.5" speakers can produce.

Here is my recommendation: If you like the Infinity Reference, go with them. The 6052I's from last year were the #1 selling 6.5" speaker. I would recommend buying them from a reputable store, versus Ebay or an internet site. I'm selling the Infinity 6002I's for $89 at Circuit City, so the price is good out there and it's first hand product.

Here's a bit of information for ya: If I sell you a set of speakers and you return them. They go back to the manufacture who most likely will refurbish them and sell them on the internet, through a clearing house. Just a little information about what you are buying online.

I would recommend a sub for you. If you don't want to take up a lot of space, go the the Infinity Basslink or a Bazooka tube. They will give you good "fill" bass and will make your music come alive.

Good luck to ya!

^^^agreed. if you really want an accurate musical reproduction youll need a sub....but you can always add that later. i would make sure you put as much time, effort, and money as you can on the front stage and worry about the easiest part of the system (the sub) later.

when i worked at best buy (circa 1998-99) we sold cerwin vega. might want to try there. emoji

best buy used to carry cerwin vega... but not sure now.. the local one here seemed to stop carrying them now. but i can tell you from experience that cerwin vega are good speakers. one of the best in my opinion.

Anyone know anyone who can help me tune this in the Pittsburgh area (Greensburg)?

Thanks for the input everyone! Your comments have me rethinking now. I actually have four 10" subs sitting at home. Should I go for the subs/amp first before the front speakers? Will one 10" be enough for the wrx? I had two 10's in my 2gnt. Maybe I should stop being so concerned with weight and just get more mods to make up for it...too many decisions for me...

Actually, when you say 6.5" speakers won't play the low bass of hip hop, will it at least sound decent? I am willing to sacrifice that true bass if it at least sounds clean and decent. THanks.

2 words: Boston Acoustics.

Ya, you're not going to get any REAL bass with no amps and no subs, but I understand what you're going for here.

Speakers are always a personal preference, and what sounds good to some may not sound good to others. Sometimes you can spend all the money in the world, and you wind up with a very 'dry' sound. Sometimes you go dirt cheap like I did, and everything sounds exactly like you want it. You just have to go out and listen to a bunch of different speakers. It's as simple as that. Pick the ones ya want, and hopefully they won't set you back too much.

Boston has speakers in all price ranges, and like I said, they are just a personal preference. I know they aren't the best reference speakers, and I know they aren't at the top of the hill like they once used to be. There are SO MANY new automotive speaker makers right now, and I haven't heard of half of them! ANyWaYze, I have a full system for dirt cheap, that's 2 years old, and still sounds better than most $2000+ and 1500W+ systems I've heard. But it's the sound I like. My best advice is to just go out and listen, but after that, my preference is for Bostons. Word.

SnuFFy
Sony CDX-C6850 head (need to upgrade to MP3 and XM fast!)
Boston 6.5 Rally components in the front
Boston CX 6.5 (cheapies running of head power, but sound GREAT off of about 40W!) rear
Rockford Punch 120.2 running fronts
2 Kicker 12" Comps, running off Kicker KX600.1

^^^agreed w/ the recommendation on the bostons. thier rally series are relativly cheap, but i dont *think* they are <100 bucks. definatly worth a listen though. im going to be going with the new boston z6s in my next install. best pair of car speakers ive EVER heard.

BTW...i dont think cerwin vega makes the "vega" series speakers anymore...i did a quick search for them on ebay and couldnt find anything (and if you cant find it on ebay, they just dont make it! LOL). they may, however, have renamed them or somthing.
