1) if you have the basket and magnet structure of the sub on the outside of a sealed box does it effect the sq or spl?
2) reason I asked question one was if I made an extremely long and thin box (one that does not fit the sub inside), would that effect the sq/spl? how about odd shaped boxes? I was thinking of making kind of a "L" shaped box with the subs on what would be the short part of the "L." My set up now works fine but I am trying to find a way to get more cargo space for like my spare tire and other stuff. I can build boxes just fine, i just don't want to build this to have it sound like shit.

1) doesnt effect either. it does let you subtract a small amount of airspace from the box because you do not have to account for the displacment of the magnet/basket/sub assembly. this usually amounts to about .2 cu. ft. per sub. BTW, if you didnt account for sub displacement in the first place when doing your sub box calculations dont go subtracting airspace! also, remember to keep consistant electrical phasing. when you turn a sub "backwards", its phase cycle will be 180 degrees opposite of what it would be if the sub was in a "normal" position, its going to be compressing the air when it would normally be rarifying it and vice versa. if you have one sub mounted "in" the box and another mounted "out" of it, remember to reverse the + and - wires on the "out" sub to keep the relative mechanical phasing in sync.
2) dosnt matter what shape the box is either. many people thik that the sub creates "wind" in the box, and that sharp corners and stuff inhibit the "flow", but thats rediculous. you are pressurizing the air (assuming its a sealed box). the only box design you want to avoid is one that is completly or nearly square. this can create standing waves in the corners and *MAY* inhibit the subs slightly. probably nothing you would ever notice, but i thought id mention it.

SPL covered pretty much everything.. good job man. It will cool easier as said above but also keep in mind that it's a magnet back there so any metal will be drawn towards it. I would make sure nothing is near it and that it get's cleaned every few weeks just so dust and stuff isn't collecting on that back... it won't sound different but never hurts. Good luck man.

Couple of things I would like to add.
It can change the sound slightly due to the fact that the magnet is in front of the cone changing the "front" wave of the woofer. This minimal impact could affect SPL, pressure nodes, and anti-nodes. Overall I would not be worried about this unless you plan to compete in SPL comps, you most likely will not hear a difference.
Also you are more likley to hear cone noise since the motor structure is on the outside of the box. The amount of noise will depend on the sub you are using and usually only is a problem at high excursion.
As mention above, box shape really doesn't matter for sealed enclosures. However, box shape and port location have a huge impact on ported boxes.
