you could take it to a (GOOD) electronics shop and have it done for about 100 bucks or so. unless you have a LOT of soldering experience you will mess things up if you do it yourself. not to mention taking faceplates apart nowadays is a damn art. all kinds of stuff can fall out of them.
i remember when i created a remote faceplate for my old ass sony, try soldering 12 connections less that 1/8 inch from each other, that tought me a LOT about soldering, LOL.

yeah, SMD LED's are a bitch. i have a lot of soldering experence, and i could probably do it if i really wanted to, but it would be such a PITA to do and i'd probably be afraid to break it.

Just like every one else! It's easier to redo all the other lights. Maybe more time consuming, but definitely less stressful. Some of those SMD LEDs are farking tiny. You could fit some of them in the circle part of the number 6 on your ten key pad over there. With a couple leads about 1mm long? You need a steady hand and more patience than a rock. Maybe we'll give it a try this fall when you get here. I'm relocating my radar detector display and am thinking about doing the same to my old Pioneer...
