i use my radio all the time when im working on my car n whatnot and i hate the way that i have to turn the car to ACC every time i want to use it. i was thinking what i might do is run the ignition wire directly to the battery with a fuse and a toggle switch thrown into the mix. will this work?
oh yeah... i have an aftermarket sony headunit btw.

yea that's what i'm doing. or it's actually done i just haven't hooked it up. i have my interior lights with a music module hooked up to the same switch. basically when you flick the switch the lights and radio come on w/o the key in the ignition. when you turn it back, the lights will come on normally with the parking lights and the radio comes on normally with the ignition. i thnk that's what you wanna do. just get a SPDT switch. you're actually gonna be cutting that acc. turn on wire on the radio's harness. the end connected to the radio will go to the common pole on the swithc. the other half of the wire (which is your acc. wire from the ignition) will go to one pole on the switch. then the other pole on the swithc gets connected to a +12 constanst source. pretty easy stuff. you wanna cut the wire like i'm suggesting b/c otherr wise if you just tapped in a 12v source to the acc. wire on the radio, it'd probably turn on the rest've the accessories in the car as well. hope that helped and wasn't too confusing.

another cool idea for you, if you have an after market alarm system, is that you can wire up a latching realay from DEI, and use one of your spare output channels from your alarm transmitter to turn on your radio. Press the button and it turns the power on, and press it again, it turns the power off. I did this on my old car, it was pretty cool, since i showed the car at car gatherings every weekend But yeah, the switch idea will work fine too. You could also just wire up your switched power wire at the radio to constant power, as this will keep power to your radio all the time. YOu just have to remember to turn off the power to the radio when you leave the car..

i'm not sure 'bout the wiring for our cars but unless you make sure to cut the wire and only have the radio itself wired to the constant, you may have problems with the rest've the accessories being tapped into the constant power as well. if ya decide to hardwire it to constant be sure to actually cut the wire, not just tap a 12v source into it. oh yea, and the relay stuff is fun. i'm doing that eventually. so far i added a power trunk release, and right now i'm in the process of hooking up my windows to one channel (one channel for up AND down on both windows). i'm gonna upgrade to another alarm eventually w/ more outputs so i can do the radio and prolly my headlights and underbody neons eventually by remote too. relays are fun! hehe check www.the12volt.com for cool ideas and electrical advice.
