I wanted to know the best tweeters to use and where i can buy them online hella cheap? If anyone could help me out, that would be tight!!

^^ Brings up a good point. You get what you pay for when it comes to audio stuff (or just about anything for that matter). I would check out what they have at local shops so you can hear what you are getting before you buy. What ever you do decide to get make sure it's a dome tweeter and not a cone.

Is there any difference between dome tweeters/component tweeters/tweeters? Online Car Stereo lists their tweeters some say dome, component, etc. But is there any difference, or do they all serve the exact function. ie: if I get dome tweeters, are they meant to be installed in the ceiling?

Hey its not a dumb question, I want to know the anwser myself SPL Eclipse will probably answer it in about a day, I think that he knows everything about audio equipment.

But I do assume that the componet tweeters are supposed to be used in a component set. A set usually has two 5-6" speakers, two tweeters, and two crossovers. You can mount them all together in those custom made kick panels by Q-Logic, I think they sell them in Crutchfield. Check it out.

thanks slowbutlow, its good to know that im noticed here. i have to give shout outs to audiophil and jerseystyle cuase they are awesome too.

they are all the same thing. as slowbutlow mentioned, a "component" tweeter is typically used in a component set, basically a midrange speaker (4", 5.25", or 6.5" most of the time) and a tweeter of various sizes.

the main thing to look for (although not the ONLY thing) is the construction material for the diaphram of the transducer. a "metal" tweet, such as mb quart, will produce a somewhat shaper, more focused sound.....some (like me) my call it "piercing". a "soft dome" tweeter typically uses a material with a lower resonent frequency, resulting in a sharper roll-off in the higher frequencies. this gives, for lack of a better word, a more "folky" sound. it is more subdued, mellow, and warmer. to be honest with you, thesse definitions should be used only as a basic guide, as ive heard both that sounded awesome, although i tend to prefer soft dome tweets (i listen to a lot of jazz/classical/softer stuff).

in the end, the best thing to do is go around to local shops and listen for yourself. bring several familiar CDs with you so you can really discern the differences between the sets they have on display.


on another note, you never mentioned how you might incorperate these into your system. while i consider myself a tolerant man, i beg and plead that you dont creat a "che che che" car, where the only thing you can hear is a roland hi-hat at 120 beats per minute. hell, if thats what you want to do, go for it, i just dont want you to be unhappy. tell us what you plan to do with them so we can help with the installation process, as that is 50% of the overall reseult, IMO.

I want to custom mount the tweeters to the inside part of the mirrors, (like the gauge install, but tweeters). My only skepticism in this idea is that I want to avoid excessive "tweet" right in my face. Would those be too close to the driver and passenger to have the right effect? I don't want it to be overpowering, just effective. (and custom of course).

I think it would look good, I just don't know if it would be a good place.

Any experience with this or knowledgable help would be appreciated.

i hate to highjack another persons thread, so if you have any more questions, please feel free to start a new one.

ive never heard any tweets mounted in that location in our cars, but ive heard similar setups in other cars that sounded good. it shouldnt be to close to your ears to throw off the sound. because they will be placed at around a 45 degree off-axis angle to your ears (assuming they face each other), and you will get what is called a "beaming effect". simply stated, when a speaker becomes more and more off axis with you, it begains to roll off its higher frequencies more rapidly. if the tweets were in the same spatial location but aimed directly at you, it might sound different. i would suggest placing the tweets in your desired location with some double sided tape or similar, and listening to them preliminarily to decide if it sounds good.
