I've been drooling over this head unit ever since I saw it on the cover of this summer's Crutchfield catalog. I've seen it in a couple of different soundboards, and have spent quite a bit of time playing with it this past weekend at Tweeter. I have been a diehard Panasonic fan for the past 5 years or so, but I am considering a switch, given new ownership of a decent vehicle (96 Talon Tsi AWD), and by decent, I mean not only DSM, but I mean less than 15 years old. Has anyone here seen this installed in a 2g? I am quite curious to see if it causes any additional clearance issues, especially with an unmodified shifter.

I was considering it when I got mine and ended up going with the single din unit instead. It looked to me like it might have interfered with shifting. I have not seen one installed but its really a badass deck.

Well, I haven't got to play with it yet, but I think it may give you fitment problems in our cars...not sure. Get a CDA 7995...they're bad ass and have more controls than a space shuttle. You'll love it, trust me I have a 1999 model 7893 (back when they looked like a panasonic) and it is still kickin ass 3 years later. Never had a problem with it.

Yeah with the 7995 you get so crazy controls. Comes with a big ass manual. Digital time correction, internal crossovers, parametric EQ functions, more stuff than most people will use probably. Only draw back is there is no deck power so if you don't have amps to run everything then it becomes a pretty big investment.

i suppose if i had had the money for the 1 1/2 sized alpine unit i may have gone with it, but like the other two above i decided on the 7995 (mainly due to the blue lighting ) but also it does require you to have amps to run the speakers and whats not, but i had that taken care of already at the time.

i think there could be a problem initially with shifting problems with the larger deck, but ive seen in-dash screens that basically take up the same space if not more in a 5spd and i dont recall it having too many issues and if auto probably not much either.. might require some modification to the center console insert thingy around the radio, but who knows.. might as well try is and find out for the rest of us.

neways good luck with your decision.. i totally dig my new alpine deck and wouldnt have anything less now.

I have it, there is some clearance issues with the top of the unit when it opens, but it is very fixable, i just ground some material away and filled the gaps and repainted it. it only interferes with the rim that goes around the HVAC and radio opening. it is one nice ass unit, and you can use alpine's I personalize. i thought it was kind of dumb (i personalize) until i used it. it is the shit. you put your name in, then you put your cars name in, and then you put your own custom message in. and i was like what does this stuff do. so i uploaded the file into the head unit and when you turn it on it is cool it has these car graphics and says on the screen Drive your name) then if flashes off and then a car picture show up and it says Vehicle: 1995 eclipse gs, then it says your personal note ( in my case "boost it!" )
i'll take some pictures of it at lunch and show you the things i did to clear the unit.

I got an Alpine CDA-7873 It is the single din thats in the Alpine RSX.
It's motorized and moves to 4 positions. Before i cut my shifter in 3rd gear it came pretty close(about 1.5") to touching when the face was horizontal.
I like the Sub output controls and it's 60WX4. I think i got a pretty nice setup not real flashy yet but the lcd's are coming. Ive got 2 JL 12W3's in a vented box and a JL 500/1 on stock components. Its sounds good besides all the rattling/vibrations. It's the loudest around in everyone elses opinion.

It looks great! Did you just use a dremel or similar tool to clearance the face? I am still unsure about straying from my Panasonic roots; I may just get the ghost and be done with it.

i used a dremel with a sanding drum, but when you remove that much material you get these slots that are molded in the plastic, i filled the slots from the back side with epoxy and then sanded it flat and then repainted it silver. after that it looked like it does in the pictures. it is a very nice head unit i do say, i totally loved it when i saw it on alpine's website so i bought it on the thursday that it was released. it gots a gang of functions and a nice display that you can see in the day or night with ease.
