Okay, I gotta vent a little. I had a power surge that blew *something* in my stereo last year. I did a little troubleshooting and determined that 2 of the channels on my 4 channel amp were blown.

I bought another amp on eBay this week to replace it. I installed the new amp, hooked everything up, and I still had the same problem: popping sound from some speakers, some not playing.

After further troubleshooting last night, I discovered that the rear channel of my crossover is bad. So I bought the new amp for nothing! FYI....look for it on the for sale list soon, it's a Kenwood KAC-646X, 25x4.

So my question is, what are your recommendations for a good crossover? I currently have a Kicker Impulse X3i electronic crossover. Anyone else use this one? It worked fine for me until I got that power surge that killed it. I'd actually like to get the same one because my amp rack already has a space for that size crossover, unless you know of a better one?

Fuse it next time

Ugh! You're SO right! I never even realized that. I have the main power wire coming back to the hatch, then it goes into a triple fuse block. The three power wires go to the 2 amps and my farad cap. I have power for the crossover going directly to one of the amps with no fuse! No wonder that's the component that blew!

Oh well. I think I'll just run another set of RCA's from the deck to the sub amplifier and bypass that crossover all together now. Too bad I'll have a big empty space on my amp rack where it used to be.

Wait, explain this cap thing. You have the power wire coming out of the fused distribution block. 1wire going to amp1, 1wire going to amp2, and 1 wire going to your cap? You should have your cap in the 4ga going into the distribution block, a stand alone cap won't help your two amps

The farad cap is wired to my subwoofer amp. I didn't have a distribution block to split the power wire coming from the battery when I first installed the stereo, so I ran power through the fuse block to the cap, then from the cap to the large amp. I know, NOT the best installation job. I'm actually gonna fix it all this weekend.

You've got it right. You don't need that cap on your mids and highs amp cause they don't draw the power that your subs do. Leave it the way it is...I just thought you had the cap by itself
