I want to keep my spare tire...and I don't want a bulky box in my trunk so this is what I am thinking about.

I took everything out of my hatch area...all the plastic, the spare tire...and took the metal things that hold the tire and the jack...now I am going to dynamat everything going around the wires...and everything and the hatch lid under the wing...I am thinking about just sitting the spare tire down in there on top of the dynamat...and possibly just getting some wood (what kind should I get) and just cut out like a sheet of it and lay it down in the hatch area after I replace all the plastic and just mounting two subs on that after I cut the holes for them in the wood...facing up...I guess it would kinda be like free air in a way...but it would still be mounted on wood...like a box. What that work and sound good...or would I have to go all out and make a complete box

Unless you get free-air subs your gonna have to get some kind of box. Only way just laying a sheet of wood down would work is if you found some way to seal up the spare tire well and around where the wood meets it at. You can always build up a false bottom, scroll through to the post from earlier this week about pics of box. Someone just did that. I really don't care much about a spare so I cut out the support for the spare tire and custom molded a fiberglass enclosure to fit inside the spare tire well....just some ideas.....

just an idea here but if someone could get it to work it'd save a lot of room.... since most people want to keep the spare tire in the car, i was thinking that if you could place a board over the spare with the sub mounted on it, somehow getting the airspace correct that you could essentially have a sealed box that contains your spare...you could use a few bolts, like how the spare tire is held down...just tighten a few wingnuts on top of the board with the sub so the board is pulled down tight into the spare well, that way if you need the spare you'd just have to loosen the wingnuts and remove the board...would some sort of weatherstripping be sufficient for sealing the edges of the board to the tub? i haven't really looked at the car with this idea in mind but maybe it would work, i know i'd do it.
