The stock cd player is skipping like a son of a bitch when I'm driving. Did all the older stock cd players do this? I just bought the car a week ago, so I don't really have the $$ to upgrade the stereo for a little while (and anyway, performance mods come first IMO), but I really want to listen to my cd's! Any ideas, or do I have to suck it up and upgrade?

What kind of cd's are you playing? Store bought or home made? I know some older players don't play cdr's very well, but most of the time, switching brands helps alot. Also, the skipping may be the cause of a mis-aligned laser head in the player, or the laser is starting to go bad. It happens. Most cd lasers do have a certain life span, but usually last a very long time. I've never trid this, nor do some recomend it, but try a cd laser head cleaner. Some say they work very well, others say it can mis-align the lasar by using it, but its up to you. I have an older sony HU, and its about 5+ years old and still going strong. It is VERY pickey on what brands of cdr's it will play, some will skip with the slightest bump, but i found Memorex to play without any fault. How bout some more info?

Haven't even tried cd-r's in it yet, just store bought ones. They run fine when the car's not moving, but as soon as I start going, it acts like the cd has quit playing. Every 10 or 15 seconds I'll get a couple more seconds of music, then nothing again. Thanks for the help so far

If you try one of the cleaning discs, don't get the ones with the lil brushes on them, it will mess everything up. But to me it sounds like you either need a REALLY good cleaning or that thing is just on it's last leg......

The previous owner might have had a different radio/cd player in the car then the factory that is there right now. If that is what happened, when the factory unit was put back in, it might not have been put in tight or with all the screws. If that happened then the CD player would work fine while the car is still, but then skip as the car moves, because the player is moving itself as the car hits bumps. Something to look at.

Thanks, I'll have to check that. I believe it did have a different stereo in it before it was sold to me. It still has the wires to a cd changer in the trunk even.
