#12246, "How to hardwire a power inverter?"

Okay well i just picked up a ps2 and I am looking at some visor screens (waiting for payday) I need to know something about power inverters. Most of them you can plug into the cigarette lighter. This is unacceptable in my setup. Can i just splice the wires from the plug on the inverter into the wires for the cigarette lighter? That way the inverter will only be on when i turn the key. Or is it going to be more complex?

cut the cig plug for the power inverter, run the power wire of the inverter to the blue or green wire (I cant recall which but one powers the light ring the other the cig lighter itself, when you open your center console up you'll know which is which) then run the other wire to the ground.

Then its pretty much a done deal. The inverter wont survive crank, so if you're playing your game then start the car, youre gonna hafta reset the PS2.

PS Get an XBOX

A power inverter just converts the power from your 12V source in your car to power able to be be used by home appliances such as a PS2. I haven't hardwired mine YET but all you would have to do is to cut off the cigarette plug and wire the power wire from the inverter to ANY 12V source (doesnt have to be the cigarette outlet wire), then ground the other wire securely to a metal contact on the body of the car.

you run it to the cig power wire because youre assured that power will be cut when the ignition is off.

a fuse on the wire is optional (cant hurt, prolly wont help) in this case because Ive yet to see a power inverter that isnt fused to begin with.

Well depending on the size of the power inverter, it might not be a good idea to hardwire it to the cigarette lighter because the cig lighter wire is extremely thin. If you can, find a thicker gauge wire to hardwire the power inverter to, and install a switch somewhere, and yes it would be a good idea to wire an in-line fuse with the power wire as well...

There are many different sources that you can wire the inverter to that would turn off when the car is off, it doesn't necessarily have to go to the cigarette lighter.

if you want you could copy me. i put a splitter at the end of my 4 gauge power wire for my amp then run a power to my amp and one to my inverter with in-line fuse. after that a good ground and your on your way.
