Have any of you guys used Dynomat? If so how much did you buy/use. My hatch is rattling like a b*tch. I dont want to buy too much or too little. Also, does anyone have a problem with rattling around the license plate/tail lamp assembly/bumper area? I cant get it to stop even when I press on them. It almost seems like something inside but i cant tell.Thanks.

I used dynomat in my previous car (camaro) and it really works wonders but i remember that it was pretty steep as far as price goes but i cant remember what i paid off the top of my head (got it at Bestbuy)...my hatch trim pieces were rattling like crazy too but i stuck some pieces of cloth inside and made sure all the clamps were secured and after that everything is quite from the outside...as far as the rattling around the tail lights I would take off the back panels to make sure everything looks tight....i actually found a nickle behind mine...good look..btw i have a jl 12w6

well it depends on where you get it and how much you need see if there is a shop around that does it (most audio places that have install have it) just talk to the shop dude and say "i've got some rattles can you just stop what's rattleing and charge me for that" i have a shop here in VA that will stop all the rattles for like $100

i sell the generic stuff thats exactly the same, i sell it on ebay for 26.50 / 12 sq ft under user name wu24 and got feedback to back up its the same stuff w/o the logos. i'll sell it to you for only 21.50 / 12 sq. ft. shipping is usually about 6$ then like $3 for every additional roll.
i also sell some other stuff that damps better and is lighter but it costs more. email for details (wu36@bellsouth.net)
p.s. i don't think this is considered spam because it pertains to the topic and i'm just trying to save you more than 50% !!

um... about the fixing the rattling..

the shop probably just uses the crappy spray to stop the rattling. what the spray does is dampen the sound just like dynomat. the only difference is that it's not a mat, and you don't have to lay it out and heat it on. You just spray and let it dry. The thing they don't tell you about that crap is that it can sometimes change the shape of the metal. In other words.. it'll deform the car. the only time i would use that is when u have dyno mat all laid out, and you still have some rattling.. then you use the spray on top of the dyno mat. and you make sure u don't damage the metal

just my two cents

You can find the generic stuff from McMaster Carr. Under their acoustical damping. Its pretty much the same thing as Dynomat both are asphalt based. Its a little thiner .070 compared to dynomats .075 but it does weigh less .4 lbs per square inch compared to dynomats .66 lbs per square inch. Works well and is way cheaper. If i remember correctly i paid $17 for a 36"x40" sheet. If you want a part number i could look it up.

I think it's safe to say I have more sound deadening in my car then all or you. I used 200sq feet of the MCmaster hi-temp mastic(comes out to 1.12/sq ft) and 120 sq ft. of dynamat super on all my interior panels and the doors. then I used 1/2" carpet padding on the floors and stuffed the rear 1/4 panels with 3 rolls of R-11.

there is no "overboard" on sound deadening....there's always another squeak or jiggle somewhere....

Doesnt all that stuff add a ton of weight....I used the extreme Dynamat behind where my speakers mount but thats it...I cant imagine taking the whole car apart and putting all that matting in there, must have taken a lot of time to do but must sound really great.

I could probably buy two turbo kits for the money I've put into the stereo.

gutting the car and matting the whole thing will take a solid 2-3 8hour days, with 2 experienced guys. but the more exotic you get, the longer it takes. I didn't just use dynamat. R-11 insulation, carpet padding, and fiberglass resin all work wonders in there respective application.

it's good in a sense, that I can hear more detail in the system, and I have zero road noise(just can't quite dull the sound of the greddy BL though) and when you close a door, it's like getting into a mercedes.

it's bad in a sense, that you can now hear every little thing in the car. as of now, I have no back seat and I can hear every little creek of the car flexing as I corner. As soon as I finish the trunk they should be all taken care of.

Koolade9, it was interesting reading your post because it sounds like you did the same dampening installation as I am (mastic, insulation, carpet padding and spray). I just had a few questions:

I read on your sounddomain page that you covered the car with two layers and the trunk with four layers, how many square feet was that?

How do you plan on getting rid of the squeeks from the car twisting?

What is R-11 insulation? Is it like fiberglass insulation?

Did you use the fiberglass resin to stiffen door panels or what?

Does it smell?

Oh yeah, did you deaden your exhaust at all? mine is pretty loud.

Thanks for any help.

Kelly

the spray is worthless, i've used it before and to get any decent coating, you've gotta spend like 75 bucks a panel. if you've got a super-curvy surface and there's no way you can get mat on there, use fiberglass resin mixed with sand(it's as fun to work with as it sounds)

I ordered like 200sq ft of mat from mcmaster and used all of that on the floorboards, rear quarterpanels, and the trunk. I did a friend's escort the next weekend, and we used 75sq feet in his and his is just about as quiet as mine. I "wasted" alot of it by covering every peice of metal I could find, when you really just need to use the mat in the big problem areas.

I don't think I't's metal(if it is it's my strut bar squeaking) I think it's just my rear panels because most of them are pretty loose from coming on and off while I've been working back there. once the trunk is done, I won't have those panels in the car, thus, no noise.

>What is R-11 insulation? Is

yeah, you can probably find it in the walls of your house. it's usually yellow and will say sound control on it. you'll be amazed at how much of that you can use.

>Did you use the fiberglass resin
>to stiffen door panels or

I used resin on the door panels because I've got 8s in there and they used to rattle alot! but pretty much every panel in the car can be matted so resin really isn't needed.

>Does it smell?

mat....maybe a day or two
insulation....till you get all the dust out
resin....smells pretty strong the first day or two, but will go away after that. I work with it almost everyday and it doesn't bother me anymore.

>Oh yeah, did you deaden your

that's where I used the 4 layers and 2 layers of carpet padding, and it's still pretty loud. it's tough to deaden those low frequencies
