NOTE: "Vne" is Velocity (never exceed). It refers to the maximum speed at which a plane can be safely flown without the risk of it falling apart.

I don't know the model of the Cessna you read about, but assuming it's a 172 with a Vne of 161 knots, I'm sure it's going to be a bit easier to intercept than a 757 with a Vne of 250 knots (under 10000ft).

Chances are, a terrorist trying to do the most damage he can with a plane is going to be pushing Vne, if not exceeding it, that close to impact, whereas a recreational pilot who would rather his wings not fall off in a blaze of glory several thousand feet up is more likely to be flying along well below Vne in the interest of getting his bearings and adjusting his course. Even if only travelling at 250kts, a 757 would close ten miles in two minutes flat. That's not enough time to even figure out what the hell is happening, let alone do anything about it.

A Boeing 757 travelling at unlikely slow speed of 250kts right before impact (I would suspect it was a much higher velocity) would be travelling at better than 400fps. What kind of distance is there between the building and the opposite edge of the frame on that image? Unless that's better than a quarter-mile in that viewable area, the camera would have a one-in-five chance of seeing anything travelling at a conservative 400fps.

Were the jet doing closer to 300kts, it would be travelling at more than 500fps at that point. When I think of how the plane was likely travelling at an economical cruising speed of 460kts when it was taken over, I bet it was travelling even faster than 300kts when it hit. It could have been closer to 500kts, when you think of how delusional terrorists would be in a hurry to get there and get it done before they could be stopped. Last calculation: 500kts = 575mph = 845.25fps.

Maybe the majority of the cameras face the building or the grounds? I can't really argue this too much, as you're right. There would likely be other angles of the building from closer up and farther away. So, I dunno. I guess I just figure that an airplane was hauling some serious ass when it hit the building. The Pentagon, while a very important building, is also very well reinforced. It is the HQ of our military in our nation's capital. They are going to reinforce the hell out of that thing.

Maybe the "smoke" is related to ground effect?
