illumination is usually tied into the dimmer. That way when you turn your lights on at night the radio unit will automatically dim a little so the display isn't so bright at night.

Mute is an extra and usually not used. It's intended for applications such as a hands free cellular phone base or something similar. It would get connected from the radio to the phone base so when you get a call it would automatically trigger the mute function on your radio.
