#8610, "Tuning help"

Hey guys--I'm in need of some tuning help. Its been about 6 months of on and off tuning and i'm still not where I want to be, so I guess its finally time to bite the bullet and get some assistance.

My current setup (related to tuning) is:
evo 16g
Greddy large FMIC
EGT guage
Boost Guage
Rewired 255 LPH (non HP)
Denso 660's
SAFCII
Greddy ProfecB @~19psi
Pocketlogger

I spent most of last night getting the boost controller settings right where I want them, but I did take one log. I'm probably going to take another tonight (at least 1) because i'm sure my car was heatsoaked to shit after all the WOT runs to find the right settings on the EBC.

What is necessary to look at to help me out, i.e. what do you need me to log? Keep in mind the fewer parameters, the more accurate the log, as i'm only at 17 samples/sec.

Currently i only do RPM and Timing.

thanks!
matt

That's probably the best you're going to get sample-wise out of the OBD-II port. Anything more and you're going to move to an EPROM or the like.

DSMlink!

I really couldn't imagine tuning without a knock count. Just tune way rich and pull back the fuel until the timing numbers are in the mid 20's. 2G cars tend to like the o2's in the upper 90's too. Just for reference.

No i know i really need DSMlink---but the money could be better spent elsewhere at the moment I think. I have been starting rich, then bringing it back--but it seems if I add fuel I lose timing, and if I reduce it I lose timing--its driving me nuts. I'll post a log or 2 tonight to show you guys...

I feel your pain bro. It's such a pain in the ass getting this thing right. I took a break over the winter and went out Saturday with my logger to a deserted road to get some logs and lo and behold, my logger won't get a signal from my car.
I think the end of the cable is messed up because the 2 little plastic thingies that stick into the hot-sync port are broken off. I guess I'll be buying ANOTHER fucking cable...

How do I get files from my logger to my computer to look at with the software from digital tuning? Here's a manual entry...any advice is much appreciated (I'm thinking DSMLink may just be the move here)

Baseline run
RPM Timing o2
3078 20 0.92
3199 16 0.92
3691 8 0.96
3992 9 0.96
4292 9 0.96
4378 7 0.96
4667 8 0.98
4824 8 0.98
5050 9 0.98
5230 11 0.98
5355 12 1
5460 12 1
5589 13 1
5785 14 1
5960 16 1
6097 16 1
6187 16 1
6238 17 1
6437 17 0.96

SAFCII Settings
1k 2k 3k 4k 5k 5400 6k 7k
-25 -17 -28 -28 -28 -24 -22 -18

with this log I added +4 to 4k and 5k and +2 to 5400 giving me a new setting of:

1k 2k 3k 4k 5k 5400 6k 7k
-25 -17 -28 -24 -24 -22 -22 -18

which gave me the result of:
RPM Timing o2
3074 13 0.92
3195 9 0.94
3363 7 0.96
3621 7 0.96
4050 8 0.96
4214 9 0.96
4582 10 1
4777 10 1
4976 12 1
5265 12 1
5445 12 1
5656 13 1
5828 13 1
6058 14 1
6238 16 1

Now i'm getting more midrange timing but the car seemed to buck a little at 54/55ish (RPM). Any Suggestions?

thanks!
matt

p.s. Tony--gimmie another unsucessful week of this crap and I'll sell you my friggin cable. How much is DSMlink again?!?

Yep. Your O2's are at a full volt. So rich. Have you checked your plugs lately? They could be fouled.

I bet they're fouled to hell, actually---(judging by the black mark on my rear fender)

This is me growing some balls and leaning her out---I was just hesitant before because when I leaned it out I was going form 12-13 degrees of timing to 6-7...

Can't go log tonight, but I'll do it tomorrow and let you all know. Thanks for the help!!

matt

On a side note, when its slowing climbing (i.e. losing power) in the low 6's should I get off of it or will the totally stock motor handle it for logging sake? I usually stay on it just for a bit to get a log, but I'm kinda thinking I shoudl just get off because if its not making any power, i'm not gonna be driving it there anyways

lean it out a little up top and stay on it. It's losing power from being too rich. BTW, too rich will also cause knock so don't confuse them. Thats the only good thing about seeing what your o2's are...

Yeah, an AFPR would be of great help. Also, do you have an EGT gauge? Its the best true indicator (other than a wideband) of how rich/lean you're running. If you dont have one, get one. Tune for 1500-1550F at the top of 4th. Also, make sure to stick her in the #1 runner, farthest away from the entrance of the fuel rail.

I would if I were you, its a longer pull and the engine is under more load. At least for me, 3rd goes by too quickly, sometimes I wont even get up to full temp in 3rd. I like to watch her peg 1550 and hang there for a while to make sure everythings kosher.

the only thing that worries me about tuning in 4th is that 4th tops out so high...but I think i'm gonna switch and do it in 4th, and see what my EGT's are reading.

I checked the turbo (see other post) and it seemed fine, but I cannot exmplain the white smoke for the life of me
