What year is your car? I've noticed on my 95 that sometimes the idle air control wires would rub against my EGR pipe, which would burn through them and cause a short. make sure they aren't touching anything back there.

I have a 98, and like Dino said, they run awful close to hot pipes.
To determine if your IAC is working, get a Service manual and they have tests in there for determing whether ANY of your sensors are malfunctioning with the use of a simple multimeter.
